As many of you know, IMAN has struggled over the years to consistently combat
the disastrous effect of Muslim/Arab-owned liquor stores in inner-city
communities.
Our primary methods of dealing with this issue have been to provide community
residents with alternative images of Muslims and Islam. Tomorrow we have an
opportunity to even do more than that.
In a local community meeting that we attended around the Inner-City Islamic
Center back in March, we found residents talking about one particular
establishment that a number of community residents have mobilized against. In
fact, the residents had succeeded in securing enough votes and signatures to
help close the store. Yet, the owners protested and sought other means to open
yet another store in the area and are once again attempting to secure a liquor
license, even though some in the community have pleaded with them not to.
Tomorrow will be the second time the group has appeared in front of the Liquor
License Commission and the second time IMAN representatives will be present,
insha’Allah.
The current owners of this establishment have a grocery store at 53rd and Woods,
five blocks west of the Inner-City Islamic Center. This store is not eligible
for a liquor license because of its proximity to a local elementary school.
Consequently, the same owners are trying to secure a liquor license for a
recently purchased establishment three blocks north at 51st and Woods.
IMAN was ,once again, asked if we would help bring people to the Liquor License
Commission hearing in support of the community’s struggle to deny the owners a
liquor license. If you do plan to attend, we recommend wearing an IMAN t-shirt,
if you have one, to clearly demonstrate our unified support with the community.
