I suspect the cause of gulf war syndrome is a particular pesticide/ solvent / teratogen / neurotoxin
 
The anemia is the most serious aspect of it
 
Is your husband having seizures?  Shortness of breath?  rapid heart beat?  'the chills?'

they don't help as much as they could
 
High white blood cell counts for this group is less likely to be an infection or lymphoma, but an anemia sign
