Dear Mr. Bill Steigner,

1828 is correct! Bunsei is the name of era. The 11th year of Bunsei era is
1828. In the original Japanese text, for accuracy, Miyagi has added the
equivalent year of Chinese era, namely the 8th year of Dao Guang era (Qing
dynasty). The 8th year of Dao Guang era is 1828. Therefore, it is a mistake
if Mr. Tamano translated Bunsei 11 as 1879.

I am the one who translated this essay "Historical Outline of Karate-do"
last year and also posted it to this Gojuryu Yahoogroup forum. Please read
the Message No.2790 Historical Outline of Karate-do (Part 3) dated
December 8, 2001. Recently my translation article has appeared again in the
"Fighting Arts".
