Good evening ladies and gents-
My name is Ken and my wife's name is Barb. I am currently in the
Marine Corps and stationed in Okinawa Japan. We have been here since
January 2000 and this past March we finally got into martial arts.
There are many different disciplines to choose from on base and off,
but when my father-in-law came to visit, he told us about a dojo that
his friend had gone to. And with the help of an Okinawan friend of
mine we found the dojo that my father-in-law was talking about.
We found the dojo in Nishihara, and after watching the first night,
we decided to join. So far studying Go Ju Ryu under Hokama Sinsea
has been very exciting. We are currently the only Americans in the
dojo. Everyone else in the dojo speaks a little bit of English, but
with time we are slowly understanding the Japanese language and
culture. Everyone in the dojo is also very friendly and helpful.
Some of the Okinawans are trying to teach us Japanese and Hogan which
is a little tricky.
Overall we are both very glad and very proud to be apart of the Go
Ju Ryu martial arts. Not just because of the art, but because we
made new friends, learned some of the history, and to actually train
under an Okinawan sinsea. Plus it is great excercise!

You are so lucky! I'm jealous!! Seriously I could not dream of a better way
to get started than the way you are doing it. The head of the style I study
is in Okinawa ( Naha ) and I hope to travel there someday to study with him.
Seminars etc. are fine but to go every day & study! I'm glad to hear that
the Dojo is so good. It is true that people who study Karate have two
families. You have your own family that you live with and such and another
family that is your Dojo family. Enjoy!
