I have dined out all over the place in WNY and have had great meals every place I go. I managed alot of food and beverage outlets for many yrs and have some tips for you.....
1) Look at the menu online to see if they have something you THINK you can eat or may want.
2) Call the resturaunt ahead of time NOT durring the dinner hour or Lunch hour it is too busy and they will not be able to talk. Ask to speak to the chef, owner or manager and explain your dietary restricitions. Have 3 menu items in mind you want to discuss and zero in on them. Call a week in advance b/c it may take you that long to hook up with the right person and get all your questions answered.
3) When you get the the place always ask to speak to the person who helped you on the phone to let them know you are here. You will be suprised how attentive they will be . Alot of times they will oversee your meal personally all along the way to insure it is ok for you.
4) When your server takes your order make sure you re-explain your needs and note you have already discussed this with the chef, owner manager etc. That way if they are confused or have questions they have a go-to person to approach.
5) Tip well if you had a good experience. This special diet is not only a pain in the butt for you but for everyone involved in your experiences so take care of them!!!
6) GF Meal cards are avaliable on websites you can give to your server but I do not use them. They list all thh things you can not eat. I know from experience servers on;y have 3- 4 hrs to make there money each shift. Expecting them to read a card and run all over the kitchen to the chef, salad prep area and line cooks explaining your needs in not realistic so I do not use this method. Many others seem to use the cards and have good luck I guess.
MORE TIPS-
I like crab legs and a baked potaot........so safe it is ridiculous. What could they do to that????? If you ever want a safe meal at the drop of a hat and do not want to call or research ...order this is you like it! The only thing you have to say is be sure to put no garnish or bread on the plate and be sure the potato is not basted.
The following places are favorites of mine and are not chains Although I go to tons of chains too. Be sure to check the local resources area on the glutenfreeinwny.com web site for a nice listing of resturaunts....
Brownstone Bistro- downtown buffalo
The Western Door in the Niagara Falls usa casino
Curlys- they have a gluten free menu . GF BREAD ON THE TANBLE FOR YOU!!!! (it is in Lackawanna)
Dock at The Bay- south of buffalo
Harrys Harbour Place-downtown buffalo

Pizza Plant- Williamsville (wed they have gf food/no other day) chicken fingers & desserts are wonderful!
