Commercial oats are cross-contaminated with wheat and or barley in   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #521 of 2097 |
After reading a post on another celiac list regarding the consumption of oats and celiac disease I thought I would share some interesting information which was presented by Shelley Case RD during her recent visit to Buffalo.  After viewing these studies I personally would not eat oats until a cleaner source is available.  The good news is there is a Canadian company that has begun processing and packaging a pure oat product that should be available in the US late 2005.  That company is www.creamhillestates.com .  Shelley's web site is www.glutenfreediet.ca/ .

Oats – Canadian Celiac Association Position Statement
The safety of oats in adults & children with CD has been extensively investigated. Clinical evidence that consumption of
pure, uncontaminated oats by adults (50-70 g/d) and children (20-25 g/d) with CD is safe. Studies in adults looking at the
consumption of oats over 5 years have confirmed their safety. However, the studies looking at the safety of oats in CD have
involved a small number of subjects, the oats used were pure, free of any gluten contamination and the amount allowed per
day was also limited. A small number of individuals with CD may not tolerate even pure, uncontaminated oats. If any symptoms develop after starting oats, the individuals must check with their physician
