The 2004 tsunami that hit the west coast of Thailand was generated by the Sunda Trench fault which is about 135 miles west of Sumatra. Koh Phangan is on the east side of Thailand so it is highly unlikely that a fault generated wave could reach that part of Thailand.
Regarding Bird flu "Almost all human cases have been traced to close contact with infected poultry" is a quote from http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4988710. If you are concerned about bird flu, you may want to avoid handling birds and there are no domestic birds near the conference area. There is no evidence of human to human transmission, so the chances of contracting bird flu is similar to getting struck by a meteorite.
