IAE 2006 - 16th World Congress on Ergonomics
July 10-14, 2006
Masstrichtthe Netherlands
The International Ergonomics Association (IEA) is the federation of
ergonomics and human factors societies from around the world.
The mission of the IEA is to elaborate and advance ergonomics science and
practice, and to improve the quality of life by expanding its scope of
application and contribution to society.
It is most encouraging to see the growing involvement and commitment of
Ergonomists in Industrially Developing Countries (IDCs). The IEA Triennial
Congress gives us a golden opportunity to get together to discuss our work
in IDCs, our research and application thereof, and our successes and
problems.
The number of papers presented in Korea was significantly greater than at
any previous IEA Congress
– lets keep the momentum going and have a good IDC turnout in Maastricht.
The theme in 2006 is
“Meeting Diversity in Ergonomics” – we in IDCs can sure show how we cope
with extreme diversity.

Dear Andrew
You certainly seem to have got a ball rolling here...well done. It has
been great, and most encouraging to see the interest in IDCs. Would it
be possible to use this forum to promote the IDC sessions at the IEA
Triennial Congress 2006? I am attaching two flyers I have put together
and am sending out to interested parties to try to promote a big IDC
drive in Maastricht next year. Please will you all encourage all those
committed to improve working conditions for millions of manual
labourers around the globe to participate and make "others" aware of
our plight.
Cheers

Colleagues
Some of you may have already picked up the news that at the grand age of 92, the
great epidemiologist Richard Doll has died (24th July).
Although most renowned for his work on the link between lung cancer and tobacco
smoking, his work included substantial elucidation of workplace exposures and
ill health. In the UK his efforts, with Richard Peto, helped to clarify the
risks from asbestos exposures.
Above all, he worked with and then took over from Bradford Hill in developing a
rigorous approach to epidemiology based on careful collection and analysis of
data. As occupational health continues to seek evidence-based strategies, we all
owe him a huge debt.

South Korea's Dioxin Double Take
By James Card
CHANGWON, South Korea, July 19, 2005 (ENS) - The South Korean
government has promised to establish dioxin regulations by the end of
this year after studies are done to determine if dioxins are dangerous
to humans. Dioxins are a group of 75 chemically related chemicals
classified by the World Health Organization as damaging persistent
organic pollutants. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers
them as human carcinogens, but in South Korea, dioxins are not
officially proven to be harmful.

Dear Friends:
On behalf of 2nd. Asia Pacific Conference on Risk Management for
Preventive Medicine (2nd. APCRMPM) committee, we are deeply honoured
to announce our 2nd. APCRMPM in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia
scheduled on October 1-3, 2005.
The coming conference would like to engage professionals, academics,
scholars, scientists, managers and representatives of workers that
are concerned about issues in risk management in preventive medicine
to deliberate and examine recent developments in preventive medicine
and occupational safety and health (OSH) especially in relation to
stress and mental health, asthma and related respiratory disorders,
solvent exposure and management, ergonomic designs in workplaces,
and OSH risks and management in Small and Medium Industries (SMIs).
Risk of chemical exposures and management, including pesticides and
chemicals commonly employed in industries in the Asia Pacific
region, will also be examined critically and we certainly expect a
lively discussion on these issues. The threat of emerging infections
in the Asia Pacific region such as the Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS), Nipah Virus, and the more recent outbreak of Avian
Flu has had major impacts on regional economies and securities and
therefore warrant serious deliberations in future prevention and
management. The conference also welcome papers that seek to provide
concepts, models, and strategies in dealing with other important
aspects of risk management in preventive medicine. We certainly
hope that this conference will contribute towards a better
understanding of risks management in workplaces and the environment,
and that the concepts, models and strategies proposed and examined
will go a long way towards improving the lives of current and future
generations.

Smoggy Days in June 2005 Triple Over Last June
WASHINGTON, DC, July 13, 2005 (ENS) - The survey of public websites by the
nonprofit organization Clean Air Watch found monitored readings of smoggy
air in 38 states from California to Maine.
In their unofficial survey the Clean Air Watch volunteers found that in June
there were nearly triple the number of monitored violations of the national
health standard for smog compared to a year ago - 941 violations, compared
to 329 in June 2004.
“This is a gasping reminder that smog remains a widespread and persistent
public health problem,” said Frank O’Donnell, president of Clean Air Watch.
“We cannot afford to cut new breaks for polluters if we are going to meet
our public health standards.”
O’Donnell said the severity of the issue is underscored by recent studies
which showed that smog can kill. Three independent research reviews all
commissioned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and published
in the July issue of the journal "Epidemiology" linked daily levels of smog
to an increased risk of death.
In the summer of 2003, the EPA decided to fund three separate research teams
to investigate a controversial and unresolved question - whether the
epidemiological literature to date suggested a relationship between ozone
exposure and risk of premature death.
The EPA currently does not include this relationship in regulatory impact
analyses, and changing or confirming this approach could influence air
pollution policy in the United States and elsewhere, wrote the editors of
the journal.
All three studies report "a small but substantial association between ozone
levels and total mortality," they wrote.
Analyzing the three studies in the journal, Steven N. Goodman, who is with
the departments of Oncology, Pediatrics, Epidemiology and Biostatistics,
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, wrote, "The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) has some nerve - in the sense of scientific courage. That is a
trait not often associated with government agencies, but the risk the EPA
took in commissioning the 3 analyses published in this issue of the journal
must be recognized and applauded."
"The implications of this exercise go far beyond the question of the ozone
mortality effect, the ostensible focus of these papers. In commissioning
this examination in triplicate, the agency was testing not just the
ozone-mortality hypothesis, but the methods of science itself - methods the
EPA and others have used to justify regulations in many areas," wrote
Goodman.
"If these methods had failed this test, there would have been broad
repercussions for the entire field of environmental risk assessment, not to
mention the field of evidence synthesis," he wrote.
The three groups used many different methods and assumptions. There were
differences in the studies selected, the estimates used, the numbers
abstracted, the models used, the conversion factors applied, the subgroups
investigated, and the alternatives explored, Goodman explains.
When results were compared, the bottom lines were consistent - within a
fraction of a percent. A 0.8 percent increase in immediate mortality per 10
parts per billion increase in average daily ozone over the year, with most
or all of this risk concentrated in the warmer months.
O’Donnell said the smog statistics serve as a warning that the EPA’s recent
Clean Air Interstate Rule, although a step in the right direction, will not
be good enough to meet public health standards everywhere.
“State authorities will need to keep the right to take action against
pollution blowing in from other states,” O’Donnell said.

Dear Friends,
The strength of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and our
like-minded sister associations around the world comes from its members who
tirelessly volunteer to various committees and perform endless tasks.
I challenge each one of you to help us find environmental health and safety,
and public health professionals including those "who may make difference" to
help us promote AIHA International Affairs Committee supported initiatives
for Africa. So far we have 18 members on our 'ad hoc' mailing list but we
need more subscribers to reach a 'critical mass'.
Please ask anybody interested in helping cross Africa to join the
"AIHA International Affairs Subcommittee for Africa List" at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AIHA_International_Affairs_Subcommittee_for_Africa\
/
site.
We know that we can count on you.
Respectfully,
Andrew Cutz
