Hi all,
Does anyone have any words of wisdom on the current thinking/health risk position of work involving exposure to carbon fibre dusts? I’ve been asked to look at working techniques in a workshop where workers are required to occasionally drill through pre-formed composite panels and on first glance it appears that everyone is treating the dust as if it’s the black death! I’ve tried an initial trawl of the annals without a great deal of luck, so I was wondering if any of you out there have had similar experiences and could throw any light on how best to proceed. Could anyone point me in the direction of any readily available and authoritative work on the health effects of exposure to carbon fibre dusts, rather than the contradictory snippets that a typical Google search throws up.

U.S. and China Forge Climate, Clean Energy Partnership BEIJING, China, November 17, 2009 (ENS) - Today, President Barack Obama and President Hu Jintao announced stronger cooperation between the United States and China on climate change and clean energy. During President Obama's first state visit to China, the two leaders said they are "committed to working together and with other countries in the weeks ahead for a successful outcome at Copenhagen." But the meaning of what a "successful outcome" is shifted over the weekend.
SHANGHAI, China, November 16, 2009 (ENS) - "There are very few global challenges that can be solved unless the United States and China agree," President Barack Obama told an audience of about 500 Chinese students today at a Town Hall meeting in Shanghai. Obama said he hopes to achieve "a meeting of the minds" between himself and President Hu about "how together the United States and China," the world's two largest greenhouse gas emitters, "can show leadership."
BRASILIA, Brazil, November 16, 2009 (ENS) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva confirmed today that he will go to Copenhagen in December for the UN climate conference. Lula made the announcement on his weekly radio program Breakfast with the President, saying that he hopes for progress in Copenhagen. He urged the United States and China to take more responsibility for climate protection.

The Harvard School of Public Health Center for Continuing Professional Education (CCPE) offers an upcoming program which I thought might interest you. Safety in Design and Construction: A Lifecycle Approach, which runs from February 22-26, is structured to address accepted strategies and best practices related to every phase of construction. In order to play a role in the design, design review, construction, and operation of a facility, it is necessary to understand the issues and challenges that face other disciplines involved in the process. This program provides participants with tangible skills and processes that will allow them to implement these concepts in their own work. The program is specifically targeted towards architects, engineers, project managers, and safety professionals.
Annals of Occupational Hygiene vol 53 number 8 is now available
on-line. The contents list is given below, with links to free
abstracts. BOHS members can access the full text free, and should
receive the print edition by early December.
This issue includes four papers on oxygen depletion and off-gassing
of wood pellets and wood chips. There have been several fatalities
from this cause with wood chips and it looks like a risk too with
pellets. The free access paper by Viscusi et al looks at
decontamination procedures which can be applied to RPE to permit
reuse during an influenza epidemic. None of the methods was found to
be wholly satisfactory.
8 more recent papers have been published, and until they are put into
an issue they are available at
http://annhyg.oxfordjournals.org/papbyrecent.dtl . At the journal
home-page http://annhyg.oxfordjournals.org/ you can sign up to get
email notification when papers are placed on this advance access
site. Remember also that you can do an advanced search of papers
back to 1972 at http://annhyg.oxfordjournals.org/search.dtl .

Dear CIAQ Subscribers - This announcement was adapted from information provided by Bill Swietlik of EPA’s Green Building Program. ------- What You Need to Know About the Safe Use of Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to host a special federal and industry panel discussion on the safe use of Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF). When: Thursday, November 12, 3:45 P.M. - 5:30 P.M. Where: Hyatt Regency Hotel, Phoenix, Arizona, Regency B Meeting Room (Conveniently located across the street from the Phoenix Convention Center) NOTE - If you are not attending GreenBuild (November 11-13, 2009, Phoenix, AZ), but are interested in this important topic, EPA will be hosting a Webinar on Tuesday, December 2, 2009 (1-3 PM EST). For more information and to register for the Webinar, please visit https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/800171944 . Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) is a highly effective weatherization product that is important to our nationwide effort to dramatically increase the energy efficiency of our homes, schools and buildings. Spray applicators and other on-site workers, as well as Do-it-Yourself applicators and consumers, should understand that proper protective equipment and other precautions are essential to safe installation of these materials, and that without proper protections, exposures to the spray during installation could result in asthma and other health effects. An expert panel will address cutting-edge best practices and emerging SPF issues of interest to the building, construction, and weatherization industries; government officials, including school administrators; and consumers. Panel participants include: - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration - National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health - U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission - American Chemistry Council’s Center for Polyurethanes Industry - Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance
A Q&A session with federal and industry experts will follow the panel presentations. For questions on this event please contact Bill Swietlik at swietlik.william@... . Please contact Darcie Honabarger at darcie.honabarger@... to reserve your seat at the November 12th event - space is limited. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- END Forwarded by Andrew Cutz, CIH | Moderator, GlobalOccHyg List | http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/globalocchyg-list/
