"Barriers to Effective Use of Hearing Protectors." A Best Practices
Conference.

Call for Abstracts (Presentations and Posters)

August 10-11, 2006, Cincinnati Marriott at River Center, Covington, KY

The fourth NIOSH/NHCA Best Practices Conference will focus on real and
perceived barriers to effective hearing protector use.

Many of the barriers to effective use can be traced to comfort,
communication, cost, training, attitudes and beliefs. Workers in noisy
environments often get much less attenuation than hearing protector
labels profess. This conference will examine these barriers, will
highlight practical examples of solutions to overcoming these barriers
and provide direction for future research. Hearing protector use in
special populations (e.g. children, the elderly worker, non-English
speaking workers, construction, etc.), or hearing protectors used at the
limits of effectiveness (e.g. military, mining, large or small ear
canals, etc.) are of special interest.

Investigators and practitioners working in the area of hearing protector
acceptance are encouraged to attend this conference and to present a
paper or a poster. There are a limited number of podium presentation
slots available.

Abstracts are now being accepted. A submission consisting of a title,
author(s) and professional affiliations, a 300 word abstract and a
preference for podium or poster presentation should be e-mailed to:
nhca@.... Submissions should be attached to the e-mail in plain
text, Word or WordPerfect format. Deadline for abstracts is June 15th.
Notice of acceptance will be provided by July 1st. Proceedings will be
published in the journal "Noise and Health." Podium presentations will
require the presenter to provide a short, publication-ready manuscript
at registration. Poster presenters may provide a manuscript for
publication at registration.

At no additional cost all registered participants are invited to a
social outing on Wednesday, August 9th at 7:00 PM as the Cincinnati Reds
and St. Louis Cardinals baseball teams meet at the All American
Ballpark. Special seating and meal arrangements have been made for our
group.

Further information about the meeting is available at the website:
