Dear Flood Relief Aid List Subscribers,
Just as a reminder please note that back in July 2005, Abdul H. Khalid PhD,
Chemical Engineer on our mailing list compiled following information
resources on hurricane clean up and recovery (copied below) based on the
U.S. OSHA's advisory at that time.
We will keep you posted on the new information resources in wake of
Hurricane Katrina. Please do not hesitate do the same by sending your
messages to <flood_relief_aid_2002@yahoogroups.com> or posting them at

[DRAFT] OSHA Alert on Hurricanes: Cleanup & Recovery
By Abdul H. Khalid PhD, Chemical Engineer
In a National News Release, July 8, 2005, the U.S. Department of Labor
(DOL)'s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued an
alert on the dangers associated with cleanup and recovery from
hurricanes. OSHA advises employers and workers to take appropriate
safety measures to avoid injury and illnesses associated with the
recovery and cleanup operations efforts following hurricanes.
This is an advisory alert from OSHA on hurricane season during this
summer. It is important to remind people who are in the danger zones of
hurricanes in a timely manner. The employers and workers should know
that the appropriate safety and health precautions are to be observed
fully during hurricane. There is a potential for fatal accidents
involving electrocution from power lines, as well as serious injuries
associated with cleanup and recovery efforts, and with the utility
restoration operations in the hurricane. Restoring power lines, cutting
down tree limbs, and doing other cleanup and recovery work are dangerous
job assignments and sometime cost lives due to accidents.
Information on safety and health aspects and coordination among the
cleanup group involved in the recovery operations from the hurricane is
very important. Information on avoiding hazards and safely cleaning up
after a hurricane is available from OSHA web site. Workers who are
involved in recovery and restoration efforts need all kind of help. The
following web sites provide information on issues and hazards relating
to recovery and cleanup efforts:

Employers have the responsibility to provide a safe and healthful
workplace for their employees under the OSHA General Duty Clause. OSHA
plays an important role for the safety and health of American workers by
setting and enforcing standards. OSHA also provides training and
education and establishes the partnerships among the public and private
sectors and encourages continual process improvement in workplace safety
