Dear AIHA Member,
We are all troubled and concerned by the impact of the recent tsunami that
has devastated the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Southeast
Asia. As announced by President Bush, former Presidents Bush and Clinton
are leading a nationwide effort to aid those affected by the tsunami
disaster. We are encouraging our members to support the co-presidents'
initiatives for recovery by the USA Freedom Corps Web site at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov and donating to one of the many worthy charities
listed. A similar list of charities active in the region is available
through the American Council for Voluntary International Action Web site
at www.interaction.org/sasia/index.html.
These charities are helping to provide food, water, and other supplies to
the tsunami victims. As just one example, the International Red Cross is
supporting the affected Red Cross and Red Crescent national societies in
Asia working through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red
Crescent Societies. American Red Cross relief supplies are being shipped
to Sri Lanka, and additional relief supplies are being purchased in the
region. In total, nine American Red Cross personnel have been deployed to
the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia to focus efforts on water and
sanitation, restoring family links, logistics, and distribution of relief
supplies. Any and all help is appreciated.
The AIHA Board of Directors has decided to donate $10,000 to the
International Red Cross to aid the victims of this tragedy, and has
extended an invitation to AIHA's local sections to also contribute as they
are able. Letters have been sent to a number of major relief organizations
to ensure they are aware of AIHA members' expertise in occupational and
environmental health and safety. Should any of those organizations contact
AIHA seeking assistance, we will work with our technical committees and
other volunteers as appropriate to provide the support requested.
AIHA is also working with our International Affairs Committee to provide
NIOSH information from international contacts having industrial or other
business locations in the affected areas. This information will be
utilized during the initial response phase and the following rebuilding of
infrastructure.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions. Thank you in
advance for your support and effort as we work to aid in this
international disaster.
Sincerely,
Donna Doganiero, CIH
