The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has
requested the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s (AIHA) assistance
with the earthquake/ tsunami relief efforts in southeast Asia. NIOSH noted
that the worker safety and health issues associated with this catastrophe
are and likely will continue to be significant both during the response
phase and the subsequent rebuilding of infrastructure. The U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are providing assistance in a number of
different areas. NIOSH, which is part of CDC, has established an
Occupational and Environmental Health Team in its Operations Center to
address the anticipated worker health issues.
NIOSH has specifically asked that AIHA reach out to its members and its
members’ network of contacts who have industrial or other business locations
in areas affected by the earthquake/tsunami and ask those members and
contacts to provide some basic, current, and accurate information. AIHA will
be collating this information and forwarding it to the appropriate NIOSH
contact person(s) on a regular basis. At this point in time, the need is for
current information. Speed of response and information transfer to NIOSH is
preferred, even if the information provided is not complete. You can provide
an update at a later date.
Listed below, and in the attached file, is the information NIOSH has
requested AIHA’s assistance in obtaining. If you have operations in the
affected areas and can provide this information for your facilities that
would be appreciated. Additionally we ask that you forward this request to
your contacts in the affected areas that may not have received this request
directly.
Please provide what information you have available at this time, either in
the body of a reply email or included as an attachment, using the file
included. Please address your response to Mili Mavely at mmavely@....
