Re: A question for those who wear Irlen filters

It's wonderful that your mom was persistent and you finally got diagnosed and
got your glasses and Irlen filters. It must have been really hard to get through
life before you got help. I know it was for me. The first thing that hit me
when I was diagnosed was that so many people there had always had to deal with
the symptoms and disabilites caused by severe light sensitivity. I was blessed
in that at least I had the advantage of knowing this wasn't "normal" for me and
being able to quickly recognize the filters that made my vision better again.
I wear my filters all of the time too. Without them, I can't function.

it got passed down from my dad. but im more severe than he is and we have
different colors. i had to deal with it up till the summer before 9th grade. my
mom and i must have gone to like 3 doctors a week for months trying to figure
out what was wrong. but my mom finaly read an artical about a girl graduating
from a local high school that has it and my mom knew i had the same thing as
her. we got an appointment and ive been wearing my glasses ever since. the only
place ill take them off is my room where its really dark.

that help us cope with the problems we encounter in life. People who haven't
experienced these things often just don't understand.
> > My problems started with an injury that changed my life. All of the best
doctors at a prestigious University medical hospital said that the damage was
permanent and the was no help for it. After several years, a literacy librarian
shared information with me about the Irlen Institute. The doctors didn't
believe that it would help and talked me out of going for a whole year even
though they admitted they could do nothing to solve 95% of my vision problems.
> > Finally, I was desperate enough to go to the Irlen Institute in spite of the
doctors, hoping that the colored filters would help relieve some of my vision
problems. I never dreamed that they would help with the pain, dysfunction and
neurological problems I was experiencing until I got my first overlays. They
worked so well, I couldn't wait to get filters put on my glasses. From the
first moment I put the fitered glasses on, I knew I just experienced a miracle.
My eyes worked together again! I got my depth perception back! My vision was
finally normal again. The horrible, constantly changing distortions stopped.
Within just an hour, my whole system started settling down. My permanent
headache went away. I stopped shaking uncontrollably and my system settled down
and I could do things I hadn't been able to do in years. I know if I hadn't
gotten the help that only the filters were able to provide, I wouldn't have made
it this far.
> > This time I learned that some filter colors are good enough to help with
the vision problems, but sadly don't help with the neurological problems. That
is what I am experiencing with my current filter color and that is why your I
asked for others to share their experiences. I am so thankful.

Knowing that makes me feel less tense about the difficulties my problems cause
and I think I will be able to be more at ease next time. I won't feel so
stressed out if I have trouble since I now know I am not the only one who has to
take time and repeat the process in order to get the best color match.

still not blue or if things that dont normaly have a red tint start having red
added to their color then the color is wrong. you dont want it to change the
color of things around you. the tint is just suppose to make you more cofterable
and more relaxed so you can read and see easyer. for me my colors are light blue
with a couple dark shades of gray. at one point even when we didnt add any red
when it got too dark the things around me started to have a reder tint. so we
had to lighten it a bit.

It's just hard for me to get in touch with that stuff since I have spent so many
years trying to block out what is happening with my body so I can just keep
functioning. During testing, I can sense the colors that make things way worse
and communicate that. Some colors improve my vision and help my eyes to work
together, some don't and some make it worse. It's the process of narrowing down
the choices on the better colors to those that help best with my neurological
problems that gets hard. I usually have to have someone else watch me during
the testing procedure and see if they can tell what will work by outward signs
of relaxation versus tension or tremors and whether my reading, speech and
coordination improve or get worse with the different colors. With some colors I
speak more fluidly, others slow everything down but I am so focused on the
process of speaking or reading that it is hard for me to monitor myself.

relaxes more. when your head doesnt hurt looking through them. dont think to
much just let your body tell you what feels good looking through them. some you
wont be able to tell but the person helping you will help you through it. at
first they might need to screen you mutiple times and you might need to go back
several times to change the color but once you got the color that works for you
there might be only tini changes as your body changes as you get older year to
year.

start testing and looking through the colors some colors will make your head
hurt more and some will relax you. go with what relaxes you.
