Hi,
I went through school with undiagnosed Irlens and given the choice I would have
prefered to have had it diagnosed so I could have had some help.
Things that would have helped would have been Irlens coloured glasses or even
wrap around Sunglasses, teachers being briefed to provide me with well spaced
photocopies on coloured paper for easier tracking than black board or O.H.P.
reading and appropriate quantities of homework. I think if money allows Irlens
testing would be helpfull. At least then you'll have a firm footing if you need
to liase with his teachers. There's alot of scepticism in the medical and
teaching community about Irlens (frustrating!). I think that's because the
causes are not well understood or explained, but the symptoms are undeniable as
they are experienced.
My parents didn't get me tested for dyslexia or Irlens as they feared the
consequences to my motivation of labelling me. I think diagnosis is positive,
after all more recognised conditions like having short or long sight require
testing, and special glasses too. You may well have a local organisation for
blind people. I know your son isn't blind! Nor am I!- But they will have aids
that help tracking whilst reading like magnifier bars with a line on, to keep
his eyes focussed on the line he's reading and A4 plastic sheets with a hole in
to exclude all text except the line he's on.
I think Irlens is a useful organisation. There are also other services /
charities aimed at people with vision difficulties who have useful strategies
too. All the best.
Tim

Member: Questions about son
Hi, I am new to this group (new to online groups in general). I have a 9 ½ year
old son, in the third grade, that is having trouble in school. We just had an
educational evaluation done and it did not show any issues and his over all IQ
was 110. However, the evaluator encouraged us to get an evaluation for CAPD.
There is a strong history in our family. I am also Dyslexic. I do think he might
may have CAPD.In addition to this, my sons School is wondering if he has Irlen
Syndrome. So I have Joined this group to better educated myself. The problems I
see with my sons reading is that he reads very slowly when he reads out loud, he
tends to skip small words like the, he, etc. He often uses his finger or book
mark when reading and tends to read faster when he uses them. He has clear
avoidance behavior when it comes to reading. He does read directions on school
work. He is the least likely in his class to settle down and focus on reading
during his independent reading hour in school. He does not have the greatest
hand writing. According to his teacher his Capitalization and Punctuation is
poor and although he is good in math he tends to make careless mistakes.Given
the above issues I do believe he is having some type of Tracking issue and/or
motor control issue while reading. However, he has never complained about light
being too bright or the words moving or blurry on the page. And at this point I
think he feels self conscious about everything and has clammed up and does not
want to talk about it. And I do not want to push him.My questions are.....What
types of comments are parents hearing from their children who have Irlen
Syndrome. What behaviors are parents seen from their children that have Irlen
Syndrome. And does anyone have a child that has both Irlen Syndrome and CAPD?
Thank youCAPDmom
