Hi, I am new to this group (new to online groups in general). I have
a 9 ½ year old son, in the third grade, that is having trouble in
school. We just had an educational evaluation done and it did not
show any issues and his over all IQ was 110. However, the evaluator
encouraged us to get an evaluation for CAPD. There is a strong
history in our family. I am also Dyslexic. I do think he might may
have CAPD.
In addition to this, my sons School is wondering if he has Irlen
Syndrome. So I have Joined this group to better educated myself. The
problems I see with my sons reading is that he reads very slowly when
he reads out loud, he tends to skip small words like the, he, etc.
He often uses his finger or book mark when reading and tends to read
faster when he uses them. He has clear avoidance behavior when it
comes to reading. He does read directions on school work. He is the
least likely in his class to settle down and focus on reading during
his independent reading hour in school. He does not have the greatest
hand writing. According to his teacher his Capitalization and
Punctuation is poor and although he is good in math he tends to make
careless mistakes.
Given the above issues I do believe he is having some type of
Tracking issue and/or motor control issue while reading. However, he
has never complained about light being too bright or the words moving
or blurry on the page. And at this point I think he feels self
conscious about everything and has clammed up and does not want to
talk about it. And I do not want to push him.
My questions are.....What types of comments are parents hearing from
their children who have Irlen Syndrome. What behaviors are parents
seen from their children that have Irlen Syndrome. And does anyone
have a child that has both Irlen Syndrome and CAPD?
Thank you
CAPDmom
