RE: [Glimmer 'Colored Filter Glasses'] MY SON

Hi Lisa.

Well done for getting your son diagnosed at a young age, making support
possible through his school years. He's lucky he has a Mum with Irlens who
can empathise and share strategies as many people find it hard to imagine
what it's like to have Irlens.

Practical stuff that helps me are Irlens glasses or even sunglasses with
wrap lenses if you find some that help, experimenting with lighting (I like
day light bulbs), coloured paper, hats, caps, anti glare covers for computer
moniters, a bookmark with a hole in the middle so only one line of writing
can be seen at a time, relaxation tecniques, asking the teacher to let him
sit in a postion away from the strip lights (by a window...)

On the psychological side If I had known I had Irlens at an earlier age I
would have relished the opportunity to succeed in something I felt well
doing like sports, music or arts. I've got my HND and A levels but would
rather have a skill I could exploit and remain well whilst using. For
example I'd rather be a kayaking, or ski instructer, or a maker of clothes,
or a guitar teacher than an office worker under strip lights reading all
day. I think pursuing some thing and doing well at doing something that came
naturally helps maintain self esteem when school is hard and helps with
finding a vocation.

Your son's lucky to have a parent that can relate to him and support him.

Best Wishes,

Tim.

That is great that he was diagnosed so early. The overlays and filters should be able to help him a lot, maybe he won't need to learn as many coping...
