Dear Ruth

Dear Ruth,

I'm glad Zoe is more confident and relaxed with her new lenses. I have
Irlens syndrome. The lady that diagnosed me told me that having flu or a
temperature could affect my Irlens symptoms and change the colour of filters
that are helpfull. I do find that colds etc. make my visual symptoms
greater, and I tire quicker whilst interpreting my environment.

The RNIB might have some ideas about funding or coping strategies for your
husband. I'm not blind but have Irlens and light sensitivity and they give
advice if I call. You'll probably have a local asociation for the blind. It
took me 3 years of bumbling around with acute photophobia before I realised
I had one when my mum found it on the internet. They offer coping
strategies. I felt weird going but they told me 95% of registered blind
people had usefull sight and had some practical sugestions. They told me
there was such a thing as "disabled living allowance" which could be used to
pay for things a person with a disability needs. I haven't pursued this or
applied for this as yet so don't know much but if I decide to pursue it my
local assoction for the blind said they would advise me on how to pursue my
claim. A citizens advice bureau would do the same I should think. In fact
they've been particulary helpfull to me when I've been Ill and unable to
work as they are able to advise me as someone with a 'disabilility' as
opposed to someone with a visual acuity problem and Irlens is hard to put in
a box.

Thinking about funding again my local association for the blind mentioned
that local groups like the "rotary" or "Lions" like to raise money for a
specific piece of equipment to help someone with a disability.

I find some ordinary sunglasses particularly helpfull. If your husband found
a pair that helped he could later use the frames to have Irlens lenses
inserted when he had the money. I once bought frames that were too curved to
have Irlen lenses put in. A number called a base describes how curved a
lense is. The higher the number, the more curved. If he's getting wraps it
may be sensible to ask Irlen the maximum curve (the base) of the lenses they
make.

Best Wishes,

Tim
