Brain studies have shown that SSS sufferers use portions of their brains that
would otherwise be dedicated to decoding sound to help unscramble visual
information. My son and I have both experienced sitting in classes and simply
not
hearing what was said due to focusing so hard on trying to decode visual
information (specifically reading from the whiteboard.)
However, since Irlens seems to be caused by a specific malformed cell in the
eye (actually in the optic nerve) hearing is not specifically and directly
affected. It's the redirection of brain resources that causes the hearing
problem, not an actual auditory malfunction.
