I have spent the last month trying to get an accurate optometric
prescription. The trouble is that 95% of my vision problems can't be
solved by the optometric prescription. That 95% is the area where my
Irlen filters take over. The problem is that I can't get an accurate
prescription without my filters because of the awful distortions that
the filters fix.... So I have to wear my old glasses for the exam and
have the doctor make the adjustments based on that. This time around
I had an almost impossible time. I went to the usual place but they
had new doctors who were not willing to accomodate me, so the
presciptions I got were completely unworkable AND the doctors set off
a return of all of my old neurological symptoms by doing the exam
their way.
After that I called around trying to find a new optometrist, but
encountered oposition on every turn. The doctors around here don't
believe that Irlen filters do any good and wouldn't work with me.
Luckily, the Irlen Institute was able to recommend an optometrist who
works closely with Irlen patients. His office was far from home, but
worth going the distance for.
I sure wish we could do something to get the optometric colleges and
professionals to accept the value of Helen Irlen's findings.
