Hi, Chris,
Nice to meet you. Hm……. first, a friend of mine has a case of blepharitis.
She had started losing eyelashes over a period of two years and then got a
terrible, violent infection under one eyelid. She was told that it was a
condition involving the follicles of the eyelashes and that it had caused an
infection in the follicles and under the eyelid. She was told to use a
washcloth and soap to scrub her eyes morning and night. She has to put
ointment in her eyes (presumably an antibiotic -- I want to say it’s three
times a day). I can’t ask her any questions about this right now because
she just went through a loss of a family member, but nonetheless, her
treatment has been slow but working well, and I hope that you’ve been
prescribed a similar regimen. She was also advised to not wear eye makeup
and to get new makeup so as not to not re-infect if she did want to wear
makeup occasionally.
About Irlen, you can go to www.irlen.com <http://www.irlen.com/> to get
detailed information, but here’s what I know: Irlen was developed by a
person who believed that different people respond to the different
wavelengths of light and that the sensitivities to certain wavelengths are
the cause of learning disabilities in many people. Apparently, colored
glass lenses and overlays that fit on glasses can be used to block
wavelengths of light that a person is sensitive to that cause a disruption
in how your eye and brain reacts to light. It seems that many people who
get migraines, children and adults with autism, and people with general with
moderate to severe learning disabilities have been helped. Now, I didn’t
know until recently that I even had migraines, but apparently what I call
“sinus headaches” have been migraines all along. I also was diagnosed with
astigmatisms about four years ago, and I had a pair of non-Irlen glasses for
a couple of years that absolutely changed my life, but, suddenly, one day
after going on antibioitics (Cephalexin, aka Keflex), I suddenly found that
the words or formulas on a page in front of me were kind of disappearing on
me, and I got so disoriented that I thought I was literally becoming
mentally retarded. I couldn’t even fill in a simple algebra formula where
x=2, y=1, x+y = ?, and I’ve had five semesters of calculus. I tried to talk
to my instructors about it, and one of them who knew what a good student I
had been in the past was sympathetic. After I’d been through a brain MRI and
other tests and talked to an ophthalmologist who wouldn’t even see me – only
a phone consultation to tell me that it sounded like I didn’t have a disease
of the eye and go see an optometrist, which I’d already done with no success
-- my one instructor advised me to see the learning disability department at
my college. They suggested a few options, including extra time on exams,
software that helps you hear and track words at the same time, and Irlen,
which can be in the form of colored sheets that you can lay over your text
book or exam or in the form of glasses, all of which I’m now trying to look
into. For Irlen, you go through a series of tests to determine which
wavelengths of light you are sensitive to. You can also try to help
determine some of this on your own – follow the instructions on the website.
My fiancé and I have tried going through some minimal self testing and my
college was so kind as to loan me a colored Irlen sheet to see if it would
help me study for finals, and it does seem to make a difference, which is
quite shocking because I was incredibly dependent on my glasses of two or so
years and was really at my wits end as to what to do -- quit school? will I
ever be able to work again?? The clincher for me is that I come from a
non-technical background and decided at the age of 40 to study engineering,
and, although my grades have typically been high, I have had to work so
incredibly hard to find ways to retain information, where my friends put in
1/10th of the effort for the same grades, but once I had my astigmatism
correction glasses, my whole life changed, and now suddenly I can’t use
them.
Lastly, I also met with a neurologist. Both he and my doctor wanted to put
me on tranquilizers and antidepressants. Both told me that antibiotics
don’t cause changes in vision and don’t cause any of the symptoms I was
having, which included gross lack of motor coordination, including my
breathing, which I had to remind myself to do. They, nonetheless, took me
off of Cephalexin after four days, and, although I got better within four or
five hours of not taking a dose, I have never been 100% since, and they will
not agree that the antibiotics are the cause of my ongoing symptoms. Maybe
they are right, but it’s an awful coincidence that I would wake up one day
after taking two doses of antibiotic and have my whole life come to a
crashing halt. I’m the one who decided to stop wearing my glasses
altogether, which took two months to figure out, and which has given me the
most relief but at the same time has made me have to relearn my old study
techniques, which somehow seems harder than ever before. Anyhow, I don’t
mean to go on like this to get pity, but maybe someone has experienced
something similar and can help me. And, maybe you can think about different
things that you have done that maybe could be triggers for your symptoms, or
maybe Irlen will help you, or maybe you just need to get rid of the
blepharitis and all your symptoms will disappear. My friend did not
complain of any headaches though I do remember that she did tend to always
need her sunglasses. I know you didn’t ask for it, but here’s a website I
found on blepharitis, in case it’s useful.
http://www.dryeyeinfo.org/Dry_Eye_In_Depth.htm.
I do have to get back to studying for finals now. Do look at the Irlen
website. Go under the autism section and see the sample test that a parent
did for their child to get ideas on how to do your own colored light bulb
test. You can get colored light bulbs at the hardware store.
Good luck and I’d like to know what you find out, if you have a chance.
Regards, Larissa

Hi Larissalle-
What is Irlen? I am going through something simmilar, but not from
antibiotics. I have a bad case of "Photophobia" severe sensitivity to light
which cause migraines. I was originally diagnosed with "Dry Eye" I went to
another Doctor this past wednesday and now in addition to Dry Eye I have
"Blepharitis" which is an inflmation of the eye margin the lower and upper
eye lids, to the point where my eyes don't produce their own natural oils,
yahoo, something else, gotta love this. Know one knows what is wrong with
me. So the saga continues and my research continues, Good luck to you-

Hi, I found out how to join the group, so I am a member now. Will
spend some time reading the postings and then share my experience. In
a nutshell, I'm 43, took antibiotics end of February, and my whole
life became a nightmare due to headaches and vision problems, and my
doctor is trying to prescribe anti-depressants, tranquilizers, and a
psychiatrist. I know I'm fine and I have refused any such treatment.
I found out about Irlen from my college yesterday, and I am now on a
fact-finding mission. I look forward to chatting with you all.
