To Rita for 7-year-old son   Message List

Rita,
There are more screeners than the ones listed on the Irlen web site (Go to
www.irlen.com and click on test centers). Those are only the "lead
screeners" and diagnosticians in the state who can help you locate other
screeners.
Off list, I am sending you a story about a boy who had headaches and reading
difficulties and got overlays and later, Irlen lenses.
A screener can also tell you other accommodations besides overlays (such as
wearing a hat or visor under fluorescent lights at school) that may help
your son until such time as he can get Irlen lenses. I'm also sending you
that info.
Some students and parents immediately say: "Our school doesn't allow hats or
visors." However, many students who have Irlen Syndrome or light sensitivity
do wear hats or visors. That can be part of the individualized education
plan (IEP) or 504 plan.
See my web site for other info-- www.readingandlight.com

between a screener and a CERTIFIED Irlen screener. I actually would love to
know the name of your son's school and the woman conducting screenings
(without being certified) because it's illegal and dangerous and the Irlen
Institute would like to inform this person such facts. Second, an Irlen
screener is only certified to identify your child with Irlen Syndrome,
letting you know if color will help him. This person can suggest and
provide your son with the preferred colored overlay, but this person does
not have the ability to conduct the second part of Irlen testing where your
son's individual color is specifically identified for his lenses. Only an
Irlen Diagnostician is trained and certified to identify your son's specific
and individualized color combination for his lenses, assumming that he needs
them. For some individuals, the preferred overlay color can eliminate most
of their difficulties, but !
> for most people, the overlays are not specific enough to elminitate all
of their symptoms. A certified Irlen screener will be able to tell you
whether you should continue on with the process and see a diagnostician for
lenses. Most often, children are not screened successfully until the age of
seven, due to limited ability to express their difficulties verbally before
this age. However, for children with severe Irlen syndrome, with distinct
symptoms such as headaches, it is often possible to identify them sooner.
>
> Please go to the website for the Irlen Institute for more information and
a directory of diagnosticians in your area. www.irlen.com You may also
call the Institute's International Headquarters directly for either a
diagnostician or certified screener near you.
