Hello, I am looking for some answers to help my seven year old son. Maybe
you can help. When my son was in kindergarten his teacher frequently sent
him to the isolation room in the office for not wanting to finish his work.
We finally told her we didn't know why he wouldn't finish but sending him
elswhere would not be allowed anymore. During 1st grade we found out he
needed glasses. We thought all his problem would be over, but were not. He
still couldn't read without a headache, and his eyes hurt. At the end of the
year we asked the school to do some testing on him to see if they could find
out why he has such a problem with letter and number reversals. They tested
him for Irlen syndrome and said he needed blue, clear bookmarks to use over
what he is reading. This has helped none and he prefers not to use them. Now
in 2nd grade he is haveing a difficult time and is very stressed all the
time. He just recovered from Shingles.(brought on by stress) His
Kindergarten teacher found me a few days ago and said she read an article in
the paper about Irlen syndrome and it reminded her of my son and urged me to
check into it. The person doing the screening in our school district is not
a certified Irlen screener. So I'm trying to figure out what to do next.
What is the difference between a screener, a certified screener and a
diagnostician? We are also cunfused as what to do as far as the school is
concerned. We asked about section 504 but they want to try to classify him
under special services so the school district won't have to pay for anything
he needs. We do not want this classification for our son but we don't know
how to handle the situation. If anyone can help It would be greatly
appriciated.
thanks,
Rita
