The Knot For My Rope

Devotional for Monday, October 7, 2002 by Brenda Wood

Isaiah 41:10 - Fear not [there is nothing to fear] for
I am with you. Do not look around you in terror and be
dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen and
harden you to difficulties. Yes I will help you. Yes I
will hold you up and retain you with my [victorious]
right hand of righteousness and justice. (Amplified)

For years I was afraid of everything. I feared the
dark, getting lost, being alone. I was even afraid of
not having enough to eat.

This last fear drove me to gluttony. I ate whole
chocolate cakes, and stashed food in weird places. I
ate anything and everything, anywhere I could.

Then I had a new fear. I was afraid that I would
become fatter than I already was. I didn't know the
God who said, "I do not judge as man judges. Man
looks at the outward appearance but I look at the
heart." (1 Samuel 16:7 GNB)

In desperation, I decided to get rid of any food that
I swallowed - only later to discover that "it" is an
uncontrollable disease called bulimia. For sixteen
years "it" controlled me.

There is an old saying, "When you reach the end of
your rope, tie a knot and hang on." When I reached the
end of my rope, somebody was there to give me the
knot. Somebody told me about Jesus.

Oh! this Jesus! Jesus, who knows everything about us.
Jesus, who loves us unconditionally. Jesus, who loved
us so much that He died on the cross for us, rose from
the dead for us, and changed our lives for us!

Prayer: Oh God, thank You for hearing our desperate
cries. When we had nowhere to turn, there You were.
Especially today, God, thank You for those who carry
the message of hope, the truth about Jesus, who is the
knot at the end of our ropes. Amen.
