Welcome to the Washington Heights/Inwood Latin@ Consumer Genetics Education Network (WH/I Latin@ CGEN)
The Latin@ Consumer Genetics Education Network (CGEN) is dedicated to develop culturally appropriate human genetics information. The Project is managed by the March of Dimes under a cooperative agreement (5 year
period)
with the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration.
During 2002 to 2004, the project conducted a needs and assets assessment of the Washington Heights and Inwood communities with regard to genetic education. Based on the findings, the coalition identified the following areas to concentrate its efforts for the next five years. They include:
1.
Community Awareness and Education, 2. Training Activities, 3. Training of Health Promoters, 4. Health Policies and 5. Network Sustainability.
The goal of the Latin@ CGEN is to address the informational and educational needs of the Latin@ residents of Washington Heights /Inwood communities regarding genetics, which were documented in our extensive needs assessment.
This interdisciplinary network facilitates continued development of its community-based and participatory approach to consumer genetics education.
This network will develop culturally appropriate human genetics information that will assist individuals and groups in getting information and making informed choices about health.
Please join us for our next meeting. Meetings are held the third Friday of every month from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, and are hosted by one of our member organizations.
