Allow me a moment to tell you about a new list serve that I am starting and with it a new Special Interest Group for the Assocation for Behavior Analysis International. It is the Behavioral Counseling & Behavioral Coaching Special Interest group.
Counseling is a hybred discipline between education and psychology that focuses on helping normal people with problems. Coaching is a similar discipline; however, it focuses on people seeking to acheive a specific life goal. Behaviorism is a philosophy of science based on how the principles of learning explain how we come to know and be. Behaviorism informs and is informed by the field of behavior analysis. Both behaviorism and behavior analysis have contributed greatly to th field of counseling and coaching. This list is sponsored by the Behavior Analyst Online Special (www.behavior-analyst-online.org ) Interest Group of the Association for Behavior Analysis International (http://www.abainternational.org/ ) in preperation for the information special interest group for Behavioral Counseling and Behavioral Coaching.It focuses on the on going contribution of behavioral principles to the field of counseling and coaching. Some topics include Community
Reinforcement Approach for addictions, Community Reinforcement and Family Training Approach for coaching spouses get those with addicitons into treatment, and Behavioral Couples Counseling. As well as focus on career and decision making counseling based on behavioral and social learning models. Finally, the application of new 3rd generation behavior therapies such as Functional Analyti Psychotherapy and Acceptance and Committment Thrapy and Dialetical Behavior Therapy and thier implication for counseling will be discussed.
