Hi!
Yesterday morning, I went to the MDA Clinic and was seen by my Neurologist and a
Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist and the MDA Coordinator. I've been
going to Clinic since 1972 located in various cities depending on where I was
living at the time.
At yesterday's visit, everyone was very pleasant and congenial. Each one
listened closely, and appeared concerned with what I was saying. And, yet,
throughout it all, my FSH was only glanced at. Curiously, no one involved
themselves other than the OT who performed a hand strength test and my physician
who listened to my heart and carotids - and also checked me for foot-drop upon
my request. I have the feeling that my FSH has already been forgotten by them -
and just dismissed as part of their work day on June 12 2009 - until the next
appointment comes again.
Just before I left to go home, the MDA coordinator said to me, "YOU have to do
it." as though it hasn't been ME all along who has been managing and surviving
this disease for 37 years. I'm still caught in the tailspin of her comment that
I feel was misplaced and judgemental, and I wonder about her perception of what
life with FSH is all about. Perhaps, if those involved on the other side of FSH
had the insightfullness of those with FSH, there would be a more concerted
effort and a stronger sense of responsibility towards the remedy of FSH. Amen
to that!
Anyway, I am exhausted from yesterday. I think I'll pop in a good movie and
sleep through it. Thanks, pals, for listening.
Hi! Yesterday morning, I went to the MDA Clinic and was seen by my Neurologist and a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist and the MDA Coordinator. I've...
Willow, That sounds like a very typical MDA clinic visit. I haven't gone for my yearly exam for over two years now because I felt the same way you did....
Jeri, Have you been able to get your wheelchair someplace other than the MDA - and what about your EKG and pulmonary function test? Two years is a too long to...
Hi Willow, I would be getting the wheelchair from a medical supply store, but I thought I had to get a referral from my doctor for the MDA to pay their $2500...
Hi Jeri, When I got my wheelchair, my MDA doctor wrote a prescription for it that was then faxed over by our MDA coordinator to the rehab center where I went...
... I don't think that MDA is interested in Duchenne or ALS, either. They have never done a thing for me, so hearing that they ever did therapy or EKGs or...
My wife who has FSH went to the MDA clinic here in Indianapolis once. I somehow thought that they picked up what medical insurance did not pay. I realized...
Jeri You are so right. Last year went to clinic at suffolk, NY, the Dr. asked if I knew about Albuterol trial. Told him yes, don't want it. He said ok, see me...
Wow! I can't believe how some of us are responding to the mda issue. Having a young child with fsh and going to the clinics for visits has not been the most...
We're not condemning the clinic for young children, or anyone who is still getting some satisfaction from their visits. We're just saying that the clinics...
Hi Jeri, I understand your feeling and agree. I also understand that the only MD's that most know are Duchene & Becker (Jerry's Kids) so when we say we have MD...

....I live in Houston, Texas and I am very happy with my MDA Neurologist.... I can appreciate that, but there is a reason for it. MDA targets its services...
Hi Willow, It is disappointing to read of your experience at the MDA clinic. I am just wondering if the clinic you attended was a dedicated FSHD clinic or if...
Hi Triecia, Your clinic sounds wonderful, and I can well understand the very high satisfaction on the part of your patients. Here, there are 220 MDA hospital...
Do you feel you get less care because you are an adult rather than a child/young adult? Alex who was dx a year ago has had stellar attention from the MD...
I never thought of that, but that may just be the case. And I know that my MDA neurologist specializes in a couple of the other MD's, so maybe FSHD isn't...
Hi JoAnn, I don't know the answer to that. However, I am thrilled that your son is receiving such good care - as it most certainly should be for him. I have...
I know this thread is old and long, but I will not overlook an opportunity to bash the MDA. All I will say is this: I am so thankful I am a military veteran...
Hi! I am so glad you posted your reply because you bring up some issues I have had for years with the VA. I was on active duty in the United States Navy in...
You have brought up some very interesting issues here. Being a Veteran that does not have FSHD (MY spouse does) but receiving my medical care from the VA...
Hi Tom! Thanks for your reply. I contacted the VA asking about my Pension/Compensation benefits and Ratings for Medical benefits. I have never written a...
Hi, Willow. You are taking me back to 1990. I was stationed at MCB Quantico, VA, so the trip to the Naval Hospital at Bethesda was about a one-hour drive....
Hi! Thank you for your reply. I haven't thought of Quantico in Virginia or Beaufort/Parris Island in South Carolina for a while now. In the late 1960's-mid...
My son retired in Army recently after 20 years service. I asked him this 4th July morning, telling him you were denied benefits as "pre-existing condition."...
