Call for school-based hepatitis C education
The Hepatitis C Council of Queensland wants education about the disease
taught in schools before it spreads further. Manager Jeff Ward says the
disease had already been contracted by 250,000 Australians, with
predictions showing more than 500,000 people could have the disease by
2020.
Mr Ward says young people needed to be educated properly about the
disease.
"There's still a head in the sand approach that if we teach people
about
hepatitis C that we're going to somehow encourage them to take drugs,"
he said.
"It's a similar argument used around HIV, that if we teach people about
HIV
that we'll be promoting sex, and that's just not the case.
"I think that underestimates the intelligence of young people to make
informed decisions."
