Hi FFL ladies. This is Monica, and I need some advice. I saw my oncologist on
monday (at MSKCC Commack). At that visit she insisted i have the AC-T regimen of
chemo followed by Tomaxafin. When she discussed the side affects, i was very
upset about the hair loss. She called me again on friday after she discussed my
case with other oncologists and they determined that i also am a candidate for
the CMF regimen. they said there is a 2-3% difference in the two treatments of
the cancer matastasizing. They said the decision is up to me. So now i am really
confused! If any one would share their experiences or has any advice, i would
really appreciate it. i had stage 1 breast cancer, i had a bilateral mastectomy,
no lymph node invasion the tumor was 1.5 cm. but was a grade 3 tumor. I am also
33 yrs. of age. Any thoughts, advice,or experiences shared would be helpful.
Thank you all Monica.

Hi Monica- I understand how upsetting all this is to you...it's all so overwhelming..but I will tell you, it does get better! I would want to know(if I were you) why the oncologist insisted on the ac-t at first and if you are a candidate for the less strong treatment, why she hadn't considered that initially? What is the "down side" of the CMF other then the few % points off? I am not sure about the tumor size and how that factors in, but the fact that you don't have any node involvement is great .....I personally opted for the AC-T, when given the 2 options and all the details at the time(5 years ago)...I knew the act would definitely cause hair loss, which is very scary and upsetting... and the other might or might not...but I didn't ever want to go thru the chemo again and I wanted TO GET THE STRONGEST POSSIBLE TO ENSURE THAT AS BEST AS THEY COULD....BUT IT IS SUCH A PERSONAL CHOICE.(Sorry about the caps!) I guess because you are so young they are treating you with a strong regimen...you don't want to give cancer any openings to creep back....but see what others have experienced. I am not sorry I went with the strongest treatment possible..but that is such a personal decision. I wish you well and stay strong! Glad you are checking in on our message board..I'm sure you will hear from others  shortly!  Hugs, Joani

Hi Monica
I know exactly how you feel. I am 44 had stage 1 grade 3 and 1.5 tumor also. Exactly same as you with no node involvement. I went to the first oncologist , Dr Cintron who told me that I needed to have AC T also. I heard all the side effects that came along with that type of treatment as was very unhappy, I went to 2 more oncologists that both recommended cytoxin and textere. There was a percent different in reoccurrence ,just as you said. I choose the C T- I did loose my hair, and although it was very upsetting, I can tell you that I am 10 months post my last chemo and I just had my first hair cut.. It does grow back quickly and after getting used to the wigs, it isn't that bad. I think you have to weigh your options and go with what you believe will be best for you. I personally was afraid of some of the side effects of  the AC T- and in reality I may not have gotten them. What ever you choose to do, just be confident that you are making the chose that is good for you!-- If you would like to talk to me about it ,please call me anytime at 631 696 7232.  One other thing. a 1.5cm tumor is right on the border, so that why we get different opinions.

Good luck

hi monica my name is lori. I also had a bilateral masectomy with reconstruction last year. I finished my chemo and radiation in march. I had lymphnodes affected. I was stage 2 cancer and my tumor was 4.0 cm. It is your decision about your  treatment but please do not base this decision on cosmetic reasons. you want to be as agressive as you can with your treatment because you dont want the cancer back. hair will always grow back. I am still waiting for mine to finish growing in. I am happy with the decision that I made and if you need to talk my number is 516-622-1810. best of luck to you lori prince

Hi, Monica my name is Cheryl. I had a very similar situation to you.
The hair loss was very traumatic i agree. It is a very personal
decision about the chemo. I felt I wanted to do all I could to beat the
cancer. I wound up with cytoxan and taxotere. It wasnt fun but almost 3
years later I am glad I did it. I was 40 years old at the time with 3
kids. I also had a bilateral mast. with reconstruction. Feel free to
call. 516-435-7096. The hair does come back and if you are a hair
color nut as I am, you get brand new virgin hair to dye anyway you
want!

My name is Wendie.  I also had a bilateral mastecomy, but I was stage 3a and had 10 nodes positive. I did ac and taxol.  I also felt do whatever  you have to, I have 4 girls to be there for.  I will tell you that I shaved my head at the first sign of hair loss and that was the best thing I ever did.  It really aleviated the anxiety of the slow loss.  A positive attitude is the biggest part of recovery.  Good luck.

Wendie-  This is Rose I agree with you 100%. I had stage 2 cancer with one positive node. I had the same treatment you had. I also shaved my head the very first sign. I thought I had control of my hair not the chemo. My doctor also said a positive attitude is very important.   I couldn't agree more on that subject. No matter how sick I was I always said I am ok, but you know how I really feel. I would never give in to the chemo. My hair was my trade mark. I had long thick beautiful hair. People always made beautiful remarks about my hair. But, in the long run it is how you feel that is more important. I now have short hair and it is very easy to take care. I look younger. All of this happened two years ago. I am now 56 and people cannot believe my age.

I have a question from a friend at work. She was diagnosed with breast cancer over 25 years ago and had a mastectomy. Recently, she became the 1% who can get in back on their chest wall. She had the lump removed at Memorial in the city. Because of her age, it is difficult to go back and forth into the city. She has to see a Dr. Berger and a Dr. Lee at Memorial here in Commack. I told her I would check to see if anyone has seen these doctors and what their experience was.

As always, thank you for your time and expertise.

Debbie

Hi Deb,
It's Maria.  I have been going to MSK for 5 yrs. now and I can tell you that your friends is in good hands.  I have seen Dr. Berger only once, which was recently because my oncologist was away.  He was very thorough and caring.  I have not seen Dr. Lee but over the years I have seen many doctors there and it is a very good place to be.  How are you doing?  Are you coming to brunch on Sunday?  Can you get the word out about our kids lazertag "fun"raiser on Sunday?  Do you need anything?  Stay well.
Maria

I have a question from a friend at work. She was diagnosed with breast cancer over 25 years ago and had a mastectomy. Recently, she became the 1% who can get in back on their chest wall. She had the lump removed at Memorial in the city. Because of her age, it is difficult to go back and forth into the city. She has to see a Dr. Berger and a Dr. Lee at Memorial here in Commack . I told her I would check to see if anyone has seen these doctors and what their experience was.

As always, thank you for your time and expertise.

Debbie

My name is Wendie.  I also had a bilateral mastecomy, but I was stage 3a and had 10 nodes positive. I did ac and taxol.  I also felt do whatever  you have to, I have 4 girls to be there for.  I will tell you that I shaved my head at the first sign of hair loss and that was the best thing I ever did.  It really aleviated the anxiety of the slow loss.  A positive attitude is the biggest part of recovery.  Good luck.

oncologist on monday (at MSKCC Commack). At that visit she insisted i
have the AC-T regimen of chemo followed by Tomaxafin. When she discussed
the side affects, i was very upset about the hair loss. She called me
again on friday after she discussed my case with other oncologists and
they determined that i also am a candidate for the CMF regimen. they
said there is a 2-3% difference in the two treatments of the cancer
matastasizing. They said the decision is up to me. So now i am really
confused! If any one would share their experiences or has any advice, i
would really appreciate it. i had stage 1 breast cancer, i had a
bilateral mastectomy, no lymph node invasion the tumor was 1.5 cm. but
was a grade 3 tumor. I am also 33 yrs. of age. Any thoughts, advice, or
experiences shared would be helpful. Thank you all Monica.

The hair does come back and if you are a hair
color nut as I am, you get brand new virgin hair to dye anyway you
want!
