I too have suffered severe IBS for several years. Mine came about after an
emergency cholecystectomy which I suspect was mercury-related. Even though I
was assured that I would not suffer any ill effects after the surgery, I was
plagued with diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, bowel pain and uncontrollable weight
gain. And within a year of the cholecystectomy, I had an emergency appendectomy.
The doctors diagnosed me with IBS (which I think is the label they use when they
don't have a clue) and gave me a lot of drugs that either didn't really help or
had bad side effects. I finally went to the Internet to try to find some relief
and found the SCD listserv – and got a whole lot better when I religiously
followed the diet. In the last seven years I have never been able to stray far
from the diet without consequences.
But for me, when I chelate (DMSA 25 mg every four hours) my IBS symptoms
(diarrhea) get worse even when I strictly adhere to the SCD. It was so bad that
I quit for several months and then started again a year ago. When I took a
three week break in July the diarrhea went away after a week and was back within
hours of my first dose of DMSA. I have tried lowering the dose, eliminating
sulphur, rotating foods, dropping and adding supplements (even stopping all and
adding back one at a time). Activated Charcoal helps somewhat, but I have
trouble taking it at a time that it will not interfere with DMSA or other
supplements. Also, I have pursued DMPS, but the alternative doctor will only do
IV. I currently lack the financial resources to seek out other doctors.
In spite of the problems, I want to continue chelating because I think that the
mercury in my system is harming me more that the bowel symptoms. I am drinking
lots of water to stay hydrated and I take Imodium if I have to travel. And I
am hoping, hoping, hoping that it will get better.
