Great post. Thanks for the info.

I was wondering yesterday, as the legal assault against the tobacco
industry grinds on and on, whether the American Dental Association
and its members should be the next logical target.

The tobacco industry is under attack for misleading people, although
health warnings were printed on cigarette packs since 1964.

Contrast that to the dental profession, which instead of providing
health warnings to the public, actually lies and claims that amalgams
are safe when they aren't. That's what the tobacco industry was doing
pre-1964. But the consequences of legal liability have become much
more severe since 40 years ago.

Frankly it astounds me that individual dentists, their insurers,
amalgam manufacturers, and the ADA are willing to run this kind of
extreme risk. Manufacturers of tobacco and asbestos, as well as
polluters of groundwater, have learned to their sorrow that
retroactive liability does get assigned in this society, and it can
be very onerous indeed.

It seems to me that a competent team of tort lawyers could slam the
dental profession up against the wall, soak them for all they've got,
and bleed them of every penny they make for decades to come.

If I were a retiring dentist, I would take my money and RUN.
