The official explanation provided for the phenomenon is that nerve
endings are fixed by the fever. As if. That has to be the lamest of
all possible theoretical constructs. Homonucleus! Begging the
question! Mysticism!

I would be more inclined to think it is the same as trauma. It turns
out that crazy people can be temporarily cured of their psychosis by
shock. Why couldn't autism be temporarily cured by a fever. The
principle would be the same. It's like ECT where the primitive part of
the mind is fooled into thinking it's being killed, so it surrenders
control to the ego which is best equipped to preserve existence.
