San Francisco Foodshed Report
The San Francisco Foodshed Report is a 48-page document that emphasizes a ''Think Globally, Eat Locally'' ethic, focusing on the opportunities and challenges for increasing both the production of food for local consumption and local consumption of locally grown food
The report states that within the San Francisco ''foodshed,'' an area including farms and ranches within 100 miles of the Golden Gate Bridge, approximately 20 million tons of food are produced annually. By comparison, each year the city itself consumes 935,000 tons of food, and 5.9 million tons in the Bay Area as a whole.
But despite the difference in numbers, AFT reports there are significant opportunities to increase ''eating locally'' in San Francisco and the Bay Area. The local food movement is strong, many public and private institutions are now seeking to source food locally, and the region is surrounded by fertile land.
