Thanks for your inquiry; the kit that the doctor has is for all the
tests.
The doctor should sit with you before your blood is drawn to decide
upon the appropriate test for you. If you or the doctor needs
assistance in doing so, feel free to call our nutritionist Kathryn
for guidance.

Our general rule of thumb:
*For someone who does not eat 100% organic foods two appropriate test
panels would be our Comprehensive IV or Comprehensive V panels. These
panels combine 100 or 150 common foods with food additives and food
colorings (for the non-organic eater). If you are also suffering
from any type of skin or respiratory problems we also suggest the
environmental chemical and/or mold panel.

Hi - I am going to my doctor this Thursday to discuss the ALCAT with
him and have my blood drawn. He already has a kit to send my sample
for testing. My question is, when do I need to decide what panels I
want tested and when do I need to order those panels?

Thanks,
Mark

In The UK, It Is Reported That 2% Of The Adult Population Suffer From
Food Allergies Or Food Intolerance

Business Wire

Research and Markets
(http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c48623) has announced the
addition of "Allergen Labelling - Consumer Attitudes and
Interpretation of Proposed New Allergen Labelling (Primary Research
Report)" to their offering.

In the UK, it is reported that 2% of the adult population suffer from
food allergies or food intolerance, although this figure increases to
5% for children. In light of growing consumer concern over allergens,
new labelling rules in European Directive (2003/89/EC) were
introduced in the UK by an amendment to the Food Labelling
Regulations.

The key research objectives included:

- To assess consumers' understanding of current allergen labelling.

- To examine consumer attitudes to proposed changes in allergen
labelling on prepared foods

- To identify consumers' own concerns on allergen labelling

- To identify the proportion of the population avoiding foods and
why?

- To identify how the industry can improve the allergy advice box

- To identify how the Food Service industry can best respond to
consumers' requirement for allergen labelling

- To identify how manufacturers can maximise the potential in
the "free-from" market.

The major input into this project was a programme of original primary
research. In order to fully assess consumer attitudes and response to
changes in allergen labelling, the following research methods were
employed:

- 5000 online interviews

- 4 Discussion groups with adults

- 150 Face-to-face interviews with a representative sample of the
population in England

Topics Covered:

-Proportion of the population avoiding foods

-Understanding food allergens

-Food avoidance

-Labelling

-Attitudes to may contain and free from

-Non-retail food purchasing

Allergy Not Associated with Development of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Allergies and allergy-related conditions are not likely related to
non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk, according to a new study. Some previous
studies had suggested that allergies might protect against this
cancer.

The body's allergic reaction to a substance includes an increase in
specific types of immune cells. Some researchers have observed a
possible association between allergies and reduced cancer risk and
suggested that the allergy-induced immune response also might inhibit
tumor growth. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system, is
particularly sensitive to immune system changes, and earlier studies
reported a decreased risk of this cancer among people with allergic
rhinitis, hay fever, or food allergies. However, several other
studies found no such association.

Mads Melbye, M.D., Ph.D., of the Statens Serum Institut in
Copenhagen, and colleagues decided to investigate the relationship
more thoroughly. First they looked at a retrospective study of 3,055
patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and 3,187 control patients without
the disease. Questionnaire data and blood samples were collected
after people were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Initially they found that people who had ever had hay fever had a
reduced risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Specifically, people with high
levels of the antibodies specific for hay fever had a 32 percent
lower risk of NHL than people who didn't have hay fever. However,
further investigation revealed that among patients with cancer, the
more the cancer had spread throughout the body, the lower the
antibody levels were. This suggested to the researchers that allergic
responses might be dampened by having non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"Our finding of a lower prevalence of allergic rhinitis among case
patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma than among population control
subjects may reflect a recent decline in clinical manifestations of
allergic conditions as a result of underlying non-Hodgkin lymphoma
disease," the authors write.

The authors then studied the association in a prospective case-
control population; blood samples were available for 198 lymphoma
patients before they developed their cancer and for 594 control
patients. When they looked at antibody levels in people before they
developed cancer, they found that there was no association between
allergy and the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"Allergy may not be causally associated with the risk of non-Hodgkin
lymphoma. The inverse association observed in some case-control
studies may arise because non-Hodgkin lymphoma suppresses the
immunologic response to allergens," the authors write.

Hi All,
I have recently just had my first ALCAT test done on my own and am a little bit unsure of where to start.

I have posted the results here for the time being:

I wonder if anyone has any ideas to help.
The most confusing part is the mild intolerance to fructose (yellow), yet many fruits are recommended in the rotation diet.
I previously thought I had candida because when I avoided fruit and sugar I felt much better and the white line and film on my inner cheeks and tongue vanished. Also my stools were much better formed.

Onion, lemon, black pepper, garlic and chilli pepper also came up in the red. Now I have no problem avoiding these at home, except that it seems to be impossible to eat out then as they are seemingly always added to restaurant foods.
What happens if by mistake you eat one of these. Is it 3-6 months starting over again!

Any ideas of where to start would be gratefully appreciated.
I'm very excited about this test.

Many thanks,
Dean

Under study

Food scientists from Cornell University are looking for adults to
participate in a comprehensive food allergy study this spring.

Professor Robert Gravani seeks people ages 18 and older who have
severe or life-threatening food allergies, such as those to peanuts,
seafood or tree nuts. Participants will go through interviews and be
compensated for their time.

Researchers want to understand how adults manage their food
allergies, so informational materials on dealing with food allergies
can be produced.

The Department of Agriculture is paying for the study, which Cornell
is doing in collaboration with the University of California, Davis.

I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate Jean Koch's help with my claim and non-reimbursement.

I talked to her by phone yesterday, and she was very helpful, gave information I was not aware of and I hope we can receive something back on our claim.

We talked to Blue Cross once again, and we are required to resubmit a "corrected claim" with the proper CPT code, the incorrect one was entered originally, so our claim was denied and our charges were not applied to deductible either! it all was just lost in space from what they told me. We didn't even receive a reason for the denial...because of the incorrect code, they said it was just ignored completely... not a good move on their part, we would've liked more communication from them.

Thanks Jean! I will update everyone on this situation and let you know if we receive reimbursement in any way. we sure hope so!

If not for this forum, we would not have found out about the correct CPT code (procedural code), so anyone who gets the test done, make sure it is code 83516, or call Jean Koch at 1-800-872-5228. She is definitely an asset to Alcat Laboratory!

There may be others like us who have paid and been denied for the same reasons..

Hi Listers, here is another response to a query on health
insurance.... PLEASE NOTE: Most personal issues should go directly
to ALCAT. I do try to mediate, but you most likely get a faster
responses through them. This forum is a great place to post news and
items relating to food sensitivity in general and where I can share
updates with you from ALCAT -- thanks! Your list moderator, Linda H.

Hello Lynn,

It has come to my attention that you had some trouble getting
reimbursed for your ALCAT test through your insurance. As I am the
billing manager here at the laboratory and do many claims to BCBS of
IL, I would be happy to help you determine the reason why your
insurance could have denied your claim.

I can tell you that we submit many claims to BCBS of IL and unless
the policy does not have out of network benefits, these claims have
all been covered. Of course the amount of coverage varies, and some
people have deductibles which are applicable, but keep in mind that
this still means that the insurance is covering the test.

Please call me to discuss this and I can help you understand what
might have happened. I am available from 8:30-4:45PM EST. Also, I can
be paged if I am away from my desk.

I would appreciate an opportunity to help you if I can.

Best regards,

Some of these questions are best to ask ALCAT directly since, as the
moderator, I tend to "post" more than respond and also watch for spam
or ads, of course. But, I'm willing to venture a good guess on this
one -- that you have to check with your own insurance provider and,
depending on what kind of coverage you have. ALCAT may have a list of
insurance providers that do cover some of the costs.

Personally, I pay a fortune for my health insurance and it always
comes out apples to oranges. Either I pay out-of-pocket for health
care that I want, or I pay the higher premiums. It's a tough "market"
today with health insurance. If uncertain, I'd go with their new
fingerstick panel and see if you get any "flags" -- and, your own
feelings -- it was pretty obvious to me before I took the test that
certain foods were causing obvious problems. The test was worth
knowing what I could do better. Do you have the number at ALCAT? It's
toll-free, Phone: (800) US ALCAT (872-5228).

Good luck and let us know what you find out! -- linda h.

Ack...! I'm the moderator, but not much of an expert. I believe that I
was told that variances do occur over time. Which seems a common sense
response as we do change throughout our lives. Certainly I could eat a
big mac and fries as a teenager, but can't consider that meal today
without considering a stay in the hospital! I think another question to
ask the nutritionist is how often we should consider re-taking the
test. I'll send the query to the attention of ALCAT and see if they
might respond and of course then i'll post back to the list.

Hi Linda
What has the community seen about patients that have taken the ALCAT multiple times?  Do we see a variance associated with time or behavior/food intake.
Ultimately, the question is how set is the ALCAT RED and ORANGE foods throughout our lives?

HEALTH: March is Nutrition Month: Make it 100 percent fad-free

March is National Nutrition Month. It is a time for you to recognize
and reinforce the importance of balanced nutrition as a key to good
health. Forget the latest food fad or diet -- focus on overall
health. Here are five ways to do it:

Have a plan. Develop an eating plan. Begin by taking a few minutes
today to make a list of some of the meals you eat now. Think of ways
you can step up the nutritional value of each meal: Ask yourself
where you can add whole grains such as brown rice, wheat pasta, whole
wheat bread or whole wheat English muffins. Next think of were you
can add in extra vegetables. How about a sweet potato with lunch?

Look at the big picture. All foods can fit into a balanced plan. The
key is finding that balance. So know your portion sizes.
MyPyramid.gov is a good place to start. Go "Inside the Pyramid" and
check out their food galleries within each of the food groups.

They give serving sizes specific to every food. Look at your food
intake during the course of a day. Where can you trim down? Next, let
go of the guilt and unrealistic expectations. There is no one perfect
meal plan. Change takes time, one meal at a time.

Learn to spot a food fad. We have all heard of those popular diet
crazes, food fads. The American Dietetic Association defines "food
fads" as "unreasonable or exaggerated beliefs eating (or not eating)
specific foods, nutrient supplements or combinations of certain foods
may cure disease, convey health benefits or offer quick weight loss."
Red flags for spotting a food fad include: A promise of a quick fix,
lists of "good" and "bad" foods, claims that sound too good to be
true, diets that tout or ban a specific food or food group.

Balance food and physical activity. Where do you find your
motivation? If you are thinking about joining a fitness center, look
locally at the YMCA or World Gym. For females, Curves and Butterfly
Life are great options. If you prefer to stick close to home, that's
OK, too. Dose it out: 10 to 20 minutes, three times a day can get you
there.

I have been on the ALCAT rotation diet for almost 3 months. In the
first 6 weeks, I lost about 12 pounds. Also, my morning headaches
almost disappeared. By about 8 weeks into the program, I had regained
5 pounds and I began having more frequent headaches. I have been
carefully following the recommended foods. (I had 44 foods--red,
orange & yellow--that I am avoiding. Do any of you have that many
foods they are sensitive to?) Is it normal for weight to yo yo a bit?
I'm still very glad I had the test--just wondering about other

Author Roger Davis Deutsch Selected to Speak at
S. Africa Conference on Aging

January 2007 – Author and health consultant Roger Davis Deutsch will
deliver his address "Use of Alcat testing for determining dietary
factors effecting immune balance, health and longevity," at the First
Annual South African Academy of Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine
(SA5M) conference being held in Cape Town, South Africa, January 26 –
28, 2007.

According to conference organizers, this exhibition was made possible
by combining the efforts of the American Academy Anti-Aging Medicine
(A4M), and the South African Academy Anti-Aging and Aesthetic
Medicine (SA5M).

The connection between foods and cellular activity has long been
recognized. The result is an almost epidemic effect of food
intolerance and loss of productivity.

A report issued from Allergy UK found that 45 percent of common
health complaints in Britain are directly caused by food
intolerance. "Around 20 million people are suffering from symptoms
that impact on their daily lives and yet they are not able to get
help from the NHS," Allergy UK executive Muriel Simmons said in a
recent release.

The most common instances of food intolerance are related to milk and
its contained sugar, known as lactose, along with gluten and wheat.
Suffering from food intolerance typically results in headaches,
rashes and stomach pains, but can also inflame other medical
conditions.

"It has been recognized for 50 years that free radicals cause random
damage to DNA, cell membranes and other bodily structures," said
Deutsch of this study and his upcoming lecture. "The major source of
free radicals is activated immune system cells. The upsurge in food
intolerance has caused the inflammation and free radical response in
perhaps millions of people who have the diseases of aging, like
cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity; and a host of others.
The ALCAT test is a very reliable way to curb those reactions and
delay aging."

"This conference provides the opportunity to discuss current
modalities that might be of interest to patients and physicians. Of
course, my primary interest is in learning how certain modalities
might complement the ALCAT test. And, through the use of our newer
interface at foodallergyrx.com, I have the opportunity to share
findings faster with anyone interested in these options. It also
works along with my current participation with the Fit America
Program that runs through March."

Most recently, Mr. Deutsch also worked with his team at ALCAT's Cell
Science Systems to introduce the 20 Food Fingerstick Screen®, a self-
use test used to identify food sensitivities, to screen a limited
range. The laboratory also offers sensitivity testing for over 150
additional foods, environmental chemicals, molds, antibiotics, anti-
inflammatory medications and even food additives and food colorings.

Roger Deutsch intends to maintain a busy pace throughout 2007. "I've
noticed that there is increasing awareness and understanding of how
complex food sensitivities can be. The rise of processed foods,
organic options, lite labeling and FDA labeling is helpful and also
confusing for many consumers. Education through conferences, print,
and our own efforts, is one way to help the consumer live smarter
and, of course, longer."

Food allergies said linked to British ills
By Tate Walters

A new report from Allergy UK has found that 45 percent of common
health complaints in Britain are directly caused by food intolerance.
Allergy UK exec Muriel Simmons revealed her medical charity's
findings on the widespread prevalence of food intolerance and called
for assistance from Britain's National Health Service and grand
practitioners, the Independent said. "Around 20 million people are
suffering from symptoms that impact on their daily lives and yet they
are not able to get help from the NHS," Simmons said. "We want to see
more dietary advice being available and more training given to GPs so
that they can recognize that food could be the trigger for some of
the symptoms that they are seeing on a daily basis." The most common
instances of food intolerance are related to milk and its contained
sugar, known as lactose, along with gluten and wheat. Suffering from
food intolerance typically results in headaches, rashes and stomach
pains, but it can also inflame other ongoing medical conditions. The
newspaper said the group's findings came from a survey of thousands
of British citizens who have suffered food problems.
