Re: [foodallergyautism] allergies to vitamins

Santona,

This is a tough one, and I'm afraid I don't have a lot of personal experience with vitamins. Tom has never tolerated any multi-vitamins, and we are just now trying to get a nutritional analysis of his diet to tell us what individual vitamins need to be supplemented, and then we'll try the search for single vitamins he can tolerate.

Although Neel has not responded positively to the mB12, I would continue it, since he is having the mouthing response. This particular side effect is said to be due to the regeneration of nerves in the extremities (tongue, fingers), and so it's a good thing, and probably temporary. Have you tried nasal mB12?  Nasal and shots are said to utilize different pathways, and some kids will respond to one and not to another. Some kids apparently need both. There is a chance that the nasal spray can drip into the esophagus and into the gut, so that's a risk if your child's gut is very sensitive. Tom plateaued on the shots and has done better since we switched to the nasal, but since his yeast keeps getting worse, I am thinking of switching back. I'm not aware of long-term detriment of mB12 use if the child does not respond - I'd be inclined to stick with it.

A good multi-vitamin and mineral is advisable whether you see a response or not. My son, now 3.6, is starting to show signs of nutritional deficiences, probably due to his very limited diet and lack of supplementation.

As far as multi-vitamins, someone else will have to advise you, I have never had any success with them. I think the SCD legal multivitamins are a good place to start - they will contain the fewest yeast-feeding and most hypoallergenic ingredients.  I beleive Kirkman's, Freeda, and New Beginnings all have SCD legal vitamins. I have had great success with Allergy Research Group products.  Hopefully other listmates will have more specific recommendations on vitamins.

Suzanne and others,

Can someone share their experiences regarding allergies or
intolerance to vitamins? My son was on a standard polyvisol based
multi-vitamin since birth. I stopped giving this a few months back
when I realized that it had natural flavorings and to prepare for
vitamin based therapies from DAN!. So far my son has NOT responded
significantly to any treatment we have tried (mB12 injections, anti-
fungal, probiotics, Zn, DMG, folinic acid, DMG). I was VERY slowly
increasing the B6 per my DAN! who wanted to try B6+Mg protocol. We
saw some excessive stimming, increased echolalia, mysterious rashes
that appear and dissappear etc. I am not sure if it is the very
small doses of B6, or a delayed reaction to folinic acid, or die-off
from an antifungal treatment that we were doing. These behaviors are
continuing for the last 5 days that my son is off ALL supplements
for some testing purposes.
Although, we have no t yet seen any huge gains from mB12, we have
continued since we did not see any significant negatives except for
significant mouthing side effect known for mB12.

I want to know from others what symptoms of intolerance/allergy to
vitamins. Any negative long term ramifications of continued use if
no positive impact is seen.
