My mother was diagnosed with malingnat melanoma about 2 years ago. I
decided it would be prudent to have my kids checked by a
dermatologist just a a baseline and this way if I took them every 3-5
years or so we would be on top of any changes. My children are ages
8 and 9. Well, much to my SHOCK - the dermatologist found two sites
on my sons face that "concerned" him. He biopsied both spots. One
he did a "shave" biopsy and cauterized it - the other site he did
a "punch" biopsy and 2 stitches were needed.
The site with the punch biopsy looked like a cafe au lait spot with a
dark circle (freckle) in the center. The other looked like two
freckles overlapping.
I asked the dr. what he suspected and he said "melanoma".
I can't find any info on pediatric melanoma. Can anyone help? The
dermatologist said the results would take 2 weeks - I swear I will go
nuts in that time.
Is this rare in kids? what treatment is available? what is the
prognosis? what should I prepare myself for? etc.....
