A Healthy tip for 2008
Dear Ian,
Happy New Year. Or Sawadee Pee Mai Krap as we say here in Thailand.
As you can imagine I receive quite a number of e mails, letters and phone
calls from people recently diagnosed with cancer, simply wondering where to
start. After just a few sentences, I can tell that 95 per cent of these
people have the same common factors - AND IT IS SOMETHING WE CAN ALL LEARN
FROM. These people are invariably Nutritionally Toxic (for example, from too
much salt, too much dairy, and acid diets) and/or Nutritionally Deficient.
So that's what I am going to focus on in 2008 for you all. How to get your
bodies back into a healthy balance. Today we begin with a simple step which
starts to correct nutritional deficiency.

Antioxidants are good for you
But naturally you need the right versions!

At the end of 2004 there were two 'mega-studies' on antioxidants. Widely
reported in the press, these concluded that taking antioxidants
(specifically beta- carotene and vitamin E) could actually increase your
risk of cancer, and death! As readers of icon know, I looked into the detail
of these two mega-studies to find that, in each case, researchers had chosen
fewer than 15 out of a possible 800 or more scientific studies from which
they extrapolated their conclusions!! However there were two lessons to
learn from these studies, even if the researchers missed these bigger
conclusions...........
Firstly, the two mega-studies claiming 'danger' took research on synthetic
forms of the vitamins. As regular readers will know - I am always very
worried about synthetic vitamins and hormones. Secondly, the researchers
don't seem to understand that both beta-carotene and vitamin E come in more
than one variant form. The research on beta-carotene - and indeed your
normal everyday vitamins - featured only one variant (all trans
beta-carotene), whereas the natural state incorporates two molecules (all
trans, and 9-cis beta-carotene). Similarly, most Vitamin E supplements are
of just one type, the variant alpha-tocopherol, when the natural vitamin has
8 variants - 4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrienols. Worryingly, the very latest
research shows the tocotrienols to be the variants of most benefit, but
alpha tocopherol has the ability to block some of their benefits! (Of
course, alpha tocopherol is the only one the EU has approved for common use
- and in synthetic form too!) So, if you are going to supplement -
specifically with beta-carotene and vitamin E, or with a multivitamin, be
clear what you are putting in your body.

This morning's copy of the Bangkok Post was talking about Heart Disease and
linking it to lowered levels of vitamin B-12. (Well, in Thailand we have a
much greater 'heritage' in natural complementary therapies - from Herbs to
Massage - than in the synthetic Western world). By co-incidence I was
writing this piece. B-12 is an essential vitamin - that few people think to
take. Interestingly its molecular structure is very similar to that of
vitamin B- 17. But that's another story!!!
A deficiency of B-12 is closely involved in many diseases, and especially
cancer. I'll give you an example: One of my worries is that a high number of
women who develop breast cancer have a B-12 deficiency. As a part of their
own therapy they go 'vegetarian'. But 72% of vegetarians are deficient in
B-12, because a prime source is meat. So they could be making matters worse
for themselves. B-12 is involved in diseases like Alzheimers, and Dementia
too. People over 50 have lowered levels, as do virtually all cancer
patients.

The bad news is that, even if I started at Breakfast and ate Vitamin E rich
foods all day, I would not reach half of the levels of vitamin E that
scientists are using in their anti-cancer experiments!! RESOLUTION 1: I
promise to supplement everyday with a Total Vitamin E from natural sources.
The good news is that it is relatively easy to achieve a good intake of
beta-carotenes and B-12, naturally. RESOLUTION 2: I'm going to take
Chlorella and a multi-strain Probiotic everday. Chlorella (and we, at
CANCERactive, have the best source in the world in my opinion) provides,
weight for weight 300 times the beta-carotenes of carrots; and B-12,
naturally. B-12 is one of those vitamins, like folic acid, your friendly
bacteria help release for you. So the combination of Probiotics and 'greens'
should give me a significant and natural vitamin advantage. It's the New
Year afterall. Time for new plans. Have a Healthy and Happy New Year.
