Further to the EI collection on my retirement a significant number of
personal pledges were made, donations have been forwarded to the Cancer
Vaccine Institute and I gather that donations are still being made. We do
not know the exact figure, but we are hopeful of exceeding £1,000 including
corporate donations. I take this opportunity to thank you personally for
your generosity.
One in three of us will get cancer during our lifetimes – a shocking
statistic – especially as most families are four persons – it is very
personal and does affect you.
This area of research holds, in my view and that of many medical experts on
the frontiers of research, great promise. I attach a link that shows just
how successful some trials have already been.

Your donations will help. The research is costly – the charity needs over
£600,000 per year – but a large number of contributions do add up quickly
and your generosity does count hugely.
As you know I have been extremely lucky in my survival to date – ‘quality
life’ since diagnosis is now nearing 29 months compared to a prognosis of
just 3 months for incurable malignant melanoma. During this time I have
grown to appreciate just how devastating this disease is and so sadly I have
heard of mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and most sadly sons and
daughters succumbing to this disease.
Almost daily I hear of ‘newbies’. Once you talk of this disease, so many
friends, or friends of friends, either have cancer or have had it. It really
is astonishing how prevalent this disease is. In view of this you may wish
to retain the slip below - and pass it onto friends that are affected – it
details my personal recommendations.
Once again thank you for your generosity, and thank you in particular to
those of you that have become ‘friends’ of this charity – your ongoing
support counts.
Ian
PS Helen – could you please forward this email to colleagues at the EI,
colleagues in the Branches, and in particular, to EI Trustees - with my
thanks
