Pediatric melanoma is almost unheard of. If you go back a few topics on the
group site, another member was having a young child tested, but I am not sure
how it has come out because we haven't heard from them yet. Right now as far as
I know, there is no one in the group that has a child with skin cancer except
you. But I want you to know that you are not alone, and we will be here for you
if you need us. It is extremely important to make sure and watch your little
one very closely. Report even the slightest change or abnormality immediately.
Time is the enemy with skin cancer. It is my feeling too that children can
fight things better than adults because they have better immune systems, so this
is a plus. You have made up your mind to home school? I did that too for the
first 4 years of my son's schooling. It really paid off because now he is an
honor student in high school. If you want to discuss home schooling further,
you can e-mail me directly. I will help you in any way I can.
Since you have joined our group with a pediatric case, plus another possible
case here, I have made a decision. Today I will write to St. Judes Children's
hospital and make some inquiries to see if they have had any cases and to see if
anyone has any information. I have tried researching the net with not too much
avail. It could be that this kind of info is out there, I just haven't found it
yet. I know that nothing helps a person more emotionally than being able to
talk to others in similar situations. Anyway, I will be praying for you and
your child and family. I will post anything that I get from St Judes. It may
take them a little while to respond to me though. Take care, and remember that
if you need a friend, this is where to come.
Your friend, Angela ^i^

Subject: [fight together] new here, pediatric skin cancer, long
Hi,My name is Kim.I live just outside of Austin, Texas & am
originally from the nw suburbs of Chicago.
About 1 1/2 yrs ago my dh and I noticed an odd looking mole on our 5
yo dd's arm, it was changing rapidly. Because we were so sure of the
rapid changes the dermatologist removed it & a week later confirmed
our fears...she had melanoma insitu...the very beginning stages of
melanoma. We were blessed to have caught it so early...so far, only
that one surgery has been necessary. She goes in every few months
for check ups. Because of the skin cancer, asthma & other health
issues she missed about 2 months of school last year, so we've
decided to homeschool her. Because of the uv index being so high
here, we don't go out much during the day, and when we do, it's tons
of sunscreen and protective clothes(when it's not too hot!).
It's been scary and stressful, for her and us...we used to, we
thought, be good about sunscreen...& no one can tell us why a 5 yr
old would get this or if she'll get it again.
She's the second youngest patient her doctor has had with this
disease, Has anyone else dealt with this out there? Heard of anyone
else? Sorry this is so long. Thank you. Kim
