Senate backs stem cell bill, Bush to veto

By Joanne Kenen

2 hours, 31 minutes ago

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday strongly backed bipartisan legislation to expand federally funded embryonic stem cell research, but President George W. Bush has vowed to veto the measure as morally indefensible.

The vote was 63-37, four short of the 67 that would be needed to overturn the veto that could come on Wednesday. All but one Democrat voted for the bill, while 19 Republicans backed it and 36 opposed it.

The House of Representatives has approved the bill but supporters there do not expect to have the two-thirds needed to override a veto either.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said the veto, Bush's first, would be "pretty swift."

"He is fulfilling a promise that he has long made and he is keeping it," Snow said.

The Senate also passed unanimously two related -- but less controversial -- bills which Bush planned to sign. The House quickly passed one of them, to block "fetus farming," or implanting a human embryo in a woman or animal for the purpose of harvesting cells or tissue.

But House Democrats blocked the second one which would promote research to obtain stem cells without destroying an embryo. That research is already being done and some Democrats said the legislation was merely political cover for Republicans who oppose the more far-reaching embryonic stem cell bill.

Embryonic stem cell research has been the center of an ethical and political maelstrom and has become an issue in several of this November's congressional races.

Advocates and scientists cite the immense promise that stem cells, identified less than a decade ago, hold for people with diabetes, spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's and other illnesses.

STRONG PUBLIC SUPPORT

Opinion polls show strong public support for expanding federally backed embryonic stem cell research and disease advocacy groups have lobbied for it. Nancy Reagan, widow of former President Ronald Reagan who died of Alzheimer's, has sought support from fellow Republicans.

But Bush says it is unacceptable because extracting the stem cells, which have the potential to become any kind of organ or tissue cells, means the days-old embryo is destroyed.

"This is about the value of human life," said Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Rick Santorum (news, bio, voting record), a strong foe of the research who is in a tight election race. "It's very easy -- that little embryo doesn't have a pair of eyes, a hair color, it doesn't have a name. It's very easy to dismiss this entity as insignificant."

Supporters, led by Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Arlen Specter (news, bio, voting record) and Iowa Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin (news, bio, voting record), pointed out that the bill would permit research only on leftover embryos from fertility treatment that would otherwise be discarded.

"These embryos are never going to be babies," said California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein (news, bio, voting record). "Think of the lives the embryos might save someday. People paralyzed. Juvenile diabetes. Young people with Parkinson's disease who can't move, who have trouble speaking."

In 2001, Bush allowed federal funding on 78 stem cell lines then in existence, but most of those turned out to be of limited use to scientists who have pressed Congress to expand federally funded research.

"This is what our leading scientists have told us they want and need to move the field of stem cell research forward," said Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch (news, bio, voting record), who like Bush opposes abortion rights but broke with the president on this issue.

With Republicans divided, stem cell research has become an issue in some congressional races this year and may play a role in the 2008 presidential contest.

Of the five Republican senators considering seeking the presidential nomination in 2008, three -- George Allen of Virginia, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Chuck Hagel of Nebraska -- voted against it. Two, John McCain of Arizona and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, broke with Bush and supported expanding the research.

Hi Dale,

It was good hearing from you , and to know your diligently following John's journey.  We were happy having John home for awhile , but he was anxious to get back on the water once again.   Your so right about John being an incredible guy.  I don't think most people realize the sacrifice he is making for his sister , and the fight against MS.
Yes he has met many wonderful people along the way , and your one of them.  Thank you for your surpport.  Hope to hear from you and others in the group soon.  Take care Dale , and GOD BLESS you.            Lois

Dawn, John wanted me to post a message to you to let you know he will
get back to you soon. It's been awhile that I heard from anyone in
the group , but it's that time of year where most people are busy with
spring chores. John called me last night to let me know he was at the
point where the Ohio River meets the Missippi River, so he's on the
Missippi right now and is heading for Chicago. I'm sure John would
like hearing from members of his group , so if you get a chance please
send him a Hello. Hope to hear from you soon. Lois

Getting back out on the water! I am very much looking forward to
getting back on the water. The time off has given me a great chance
to spend time with my family. The next nine days will be familiar
to me. This will mark the third time paddling this section of the
Tom Bigbee river from McIntosh to Demopolis. This section is
largely secluded with no real chance to stock up on groceries until
Demopolis. If the occasion should arise (and it did when Hurricane
Katrina hit) I could walk a mile and a half to a small overpriced
grocery store and a gas station in Coffeeville. Unless some other
unforeseen circumstance presents itself I will have plenty of
supplies to reach Demopolis.
The random sandbars between McIntosh and Demopolis will give me a
chance to try out my new tent and get the most out of my down time.
The river winds around never really giving the wind much time to
pick up waves which is good for me. Paddling against a constant
current can become demoralizing if you let it. When I left Ohio it
was spring, down here in Alabama it feels like full blown summer
high 80s and very hot. Even all the trees have leaves. The hot
temps may force me to paddle during the night and find a shady spot
to sleep during the day.
My scheduled time of arrival in Demopolis is April 29th. Demopolis
is also where my next update will come from.

Hi Laura,

Sorry to hear you've been stiffed by Montel about your families story about Luke. If I don't get a chance which the little sweetheart Happy Birthday for me. Keep fighting the fight hun I know ya'll are very strong and tight. I converse through email with Montel I will pass along your story. If you could give me a synopsis ( i think thats how its spelled ) on your story I'll copy it and attach it to the email I'll send him because that story needs to be heard !! I was diagnosed with MS in 2003, May 5, 2003 at 4:45pm to be exact yes I remember that date to a tee. The scary part is my son who is 6yrs old and will be 7yrs old next week on the 23rd is starting to show little symptoms associated with MS. :(   But I am going to think positive as always and not let it tear me apart. God Bless ya'll and talk real soon.

Hello sorry I have not posted in awhile. I left the water December
23 to come home to visit for a few weeks and decided to stay for a
couple more months to help out as my sister and friend start a
business and also reevaluate the first 18 months on the water and
how to make the next three years better at helping MS.

The first part of this canoe trip taught me a lot about living on
the water and raising awareness for MS. From what I learned I can
make the next the next leg of the trip so much better.
Getting timely updates was the biggest problem and just before I
left from the water. My number one concern will be updating the web
site and progress of the trip. I just finished a telephone update
system before I got off the river that will work great.
I will be updating my web site this week with some new links
including one which showcases all the incredible people I met.

From here on out I will be posting regularly and let you know when I
finish updating my web site. I am excited to get back on the water
either in April or May. The next stage of the trip will be
Fightingms reloaded. Thank you all for your wonderful support in
this fight against MS!
Your friend in the fight against MS
John Latecki Jr

John went home to Ohio for a short visit and to take care of some personal buisness he had to do in person. I'm hoping he will soon have some info on his web page. Thank you for asking. John Sr.
