I am starting day 3 and my head has not stopped pounding. I am a tea
drinker. Yesterday I had 1 weak cup of tea and the headache eased.
What is the point of no caffeine, does anyone know?

My husband and I just started the new way of life on Friday. The first
3 days have been okay. My husband tells me that we really needs
coffee, and I just remind him that he is cheating himself.
I read that there was going to be a place for recipes but didn't see
anything.

This is Tazzy responding because my mom is very slow with emails.  She can't excercise because she has a very bad back injury that often times often criples her.  However her and I will be walking as her excercise regimen and we will be doing it daily slow at first and if we can increase daily we  will.  We will keep everyone posted on our success we will be starting next Monday after Easter dinner, that will be our last BAD meal.  Good luck to everyone this week.

PS Can I drink seltzere water during Phase 1 I really don't like plain water yuck!!

They are little rubber like bands that well give you some resistance when using them and they are fairly inexpensive.  I think that if you could not do the cardio aspect the bands would be very beneficially in toning up that skin.  That by the way will sag when the weight loss begins.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Hi slim and welcome to the group. Lifting weights is not usually considered
a cardio vascular exercise, but building will help you burn more calories.
Muscles requires more calaries than fat, AND muscle takes up less space even
though it weighs more. You can actually do muscle work on your lower body
daily. The large muscles of the body, abs downward do not require a 24 hour
rest between workouts. Upper body, chest, arms and back should not be done
more often than every other day. You can damage your muscles if you do it
more often.

Do not eat a heavy meal before you workout, but you can work out after you
eat. In fact, you get the added bonus of burning off some of those calories
you just ingested when you do a workout afterwards. Even if you don't do an
actual cardio vascular workout each time, a 20 minute walk will work
wonders.

I consider a light snack would be a piece of fruit, or a handful of carrots
or celery sticks, or maybe 6oz of yogurt. Somthing that fits in the hand
that isn't laden with sugar. Cookies do not count, lol.

A heavy snack would be something, oh gosh, a bowl of cereal, ice cream, a
bowl of popcorn or chips, a slice of cheese. I would say, foods loaded down
with carbs would be on the heavy side. IMO

That's not scientific of me, but it is what I would consider light vs heavy
snacks. :)

I have a couple questions also that I have been thinking of,
now would lifting weights be considered as any type of
cardio workout or not really, that would be considered as something
different? Or would it just be better for me to work out in the
morning lifting, if its a lifting day, and then do some kind of cardio
at night, like jogging or biking. Also, would it be better to eat
before you work ou, and I mean like 30 min before, or would it
actually be better to eat after the workout? Another quest I have is
what is the difference between a light snack and a heavy snack. Like
what would you consider to be a light snack as opposed to a heavy
snack, is that just the amount you eat. Sorry to have all these
question, just want to know I will be starting on the right track. thx

Thank you. It was an awesome day. I grilled for all the family. ( I
grill because I'm the best at it, lol.) I love grilling fresh
vegetables, it's about the only way I'll eat red bellpeppers. I tried
out some Lawry's marinating sauce for the first time on the
vegetables. This stuff is really good. Even those who do not usually
like grilled vegetables were gobbling it up. It's real easy too, cut
up on red and one green bellpepper, one medium yellow squash, one
medium zucchini and 1/2 medium yellow onion. Pour on enough marinade
that you can stir and cover all the vegetables. I use one of those
seal-a-meal devices and put all the veggies in a container that I can
suck all the air out of, but if you don't have one of those a covered
container will work. Marinade at least 30 minutes and throw on the
grill into one of those grill woks that has been sprayed with PAM,
stir occassionally. About 10 minutes later you have wonderful grilled
veggies. I might throw in some fresh pineapple next time and see how
that works. My grandchildren, ages 6,2 and 1, like to eat the
vegetables raw and ungrilled. It's really good that way too. You can
also use Italian dressing and squeeze in some lemon. That's good too.

I can't really call this a recipe, just a creative way to cook
vegetables. When you grill vegetables, make sure if you are also
serving meat that you do the meat first. You really want to eat the
vegetables fresh off the grill.

Hi! Just ordered my book, and am hoping to get started as soon as I
receive it. Saw the interview yesterday on CNN, and was impressed,
and very curious about how this diet works, the four phases, and am
hoping that it works with my busy life style, am going to school to
work on my masters, so if this plan is simple, then it will be a
blessing. If anyone has any suggestions, pls email me!

Hi, my name is Jennifer and I just ordered the book online. The Fat
Smash diet was promoted on The Today show just this past week, which
got me interested. I, like many others, am not looking forward to
Phase 1, but after reading many of your emails, it sounds like you can
feel great while doing it.
I am a new mom, and am trying hard to get rid of the rest of my
pregnancy weight (about 10 pounds, but could still lose more!!) I
exercise about 3-4 times a week, and eat pretty much whatever I want.
I know that my diet has to change, so I hope this book helps! I plan
on starting Phase 1 after Easter (too many temptations that day!), so
I will email again when I start. Thanks for any support!

Hey,
I read a few people bring up that they had tried some recipies that
worked for them during a certain phase, and even Dr. Ian suggested
that people send him those recipies to share to others. Now I am
wondering, would it be giving to much info about the book, if we
posted recipies here. What I mean is, I was thinking that it would be
a good idea, and very benificial to all of us, if we were able to have
a section for recipies in that certain phase. Like we could post them
in the Database section or something, where like phase 1 has its group
of recipies, phase 2....on and on. I mean theres got a be a way to do
it, and wouldnt it help out alot of us, who arnt expert chiefs?

Thx for the encouragment, I feel that it is time for me to go for it,
I am going to go shopping later on tonight and pick up some stuff to
get ready to start tommarow with phase 1. Now my question is, are
there any others in here with more reciepies to get me started on
phase 1. I like that spagetti squash, it seems good and not that hard
to make, and since Im not a cook, or any kind of expert on cooking,
that sounds great. I have a couple questions also that I have been

spaghetti squash with a nice homemade marinara or grilled marinated
portobella mushrooms for a meat substitute. Also a nice homemade
hummus with veggie sticks makes a nice snack. I have several recipes,
as I am an avid "home-chef". I will start sharing some soon. Fruit
smoothies made with soy milk and fresh or frozen( with out sugar)
fruit and yogurt also are very good. I am not a fruit eater by

am all in. Just be mindful of how much dairy you put in. I also
make a killer brown rice pudding.

one of his favorites. (just pierce it with a knife a few times and
cook in the microwave for about 7 minutes or until soft. Then cut in
half, scoop out the seed core, then with a fork scrap the sides. It

olive oil, salt and pepper. )

However, for the first time in years (actually several years) I

Hi Slimsurgery~

Welcome to the group.  I feel that since I have been on this diet since February
I need to share a couple of things with you.  Even though I am by far not expert.

The first is ......Please do not be discouraged that all you eat for the first 9 days is fruit.  Being a midwestern raised girl I love meat and potatoes.  I have however learned to love my veggies.  Right now I actually prefer them over most meats.  To really get the most out of this first phase I would suggest trying some new things.  Like spaghetti squash with a nice homemade marinara or grilled marinated portobella mushrooms for a meat substitute.  Also a nice homemade hummus with veggie sticks makes a nice snack.  I have several recipes, as I am an avid "home-chef".   I will start sharing some soon.  Fruit smoothies made with soy milk and fresh or frozen( with out sugar) fruit and yogurt also are very good.  I am not a fruit eater by nature, I much rather eat my veggies, but if they are in a smoothie I am all in.  Just be mindful of how much dairy you put in.   I also make a killer brown rice pudding.

Hi everyone. This is great Stephanie...thanks for starting a group
for us. My book should arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday.

I've tried everything, and I mean everything, to lose 15 pounds.
Yeah, I know that I have less to lose than some, but for me, that 15
pounds is killer.

I'm a 47 year old, single mom to five children. Not single by
choice, but that's a whole different thread. :o)

I am a teacher, so may find it hard to complete this diet during the
school term. I am very motivated to lose weight however...I'm
splurging for my oldest daughter's 21st birthday, which is in June.
I'm taking her and my 16 year old daughter backpacking in Great
Britain for 10 days. She'll never forget spending her 21st birthday
at Stonehenge, will she? :o)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting started! I'll check in again
soon.

I wish to take a quick moment and welcome all our new members. I'm so glad
you found us. I just sent another message to Dr.Ian requesting that he join
us. If you guys would like to second that request his email address is
Fatsmashdiet@.... He didn't accept the first invitation to join so I
have questioned his staff whether or not they were authorized to speak for
him and make such an offer as they did when I was setting up the group. I
don't want to have written that he is going to pop in once in a while and
participate if he isn't going to do that, lol.

To reportershanna, Excellent news. You are on a role. Congratulations. I'll
be starting the diet when my husband goes back to work after next week.
Tomorrow is my birthday, too many saboteurs who use the excuse of my getting
a year older that want to celebrate for me to start it this week. LOL, but
by next weekend, I begin the detox. I think the main thing I will have
problems with is going to be giving up coffee. I don't eat junk food, I
don't drinks any kind of soft drinks or other liquids. I usually drink water
that has gone through the reverse osmosis tank under my sink (our water here
tastes so awful that they even write front pages stories about it) and
bottled water tastes funky to me. I always taste the plastic. But I like the
taste of coffee and I drink decaf, of course the cream isn't defatted, lol.
So, I will miss the coffee but am willing to function without it.

To slimsurgery (I love these usernames, lol) I can understand your concern.
But look on page 21, you are allowed much more than just fruit.

You can eat:

All Fruits
All vegetables except: white potatoes and avocados
You can eat all beans, tofu and lentils which are good sources of protein
and by doing so you won't feel weak, I promise.
You can east 2 cups of cooked brown rice a day. If you add in the lentils
with the rice you have a complete protein.
2 cups of lowfat, skim or soy milk a day. I highly recommend organic skim
milk, it tastes better than regular lowfat milk and you can get it by the
1/2 gallon at Walmart and possibly your grocers. It comes in a red carton
and is called Horizon Organic.
Of course you can drink all the water you want. But NO fruit juices, they
are stripped of their fiber and full of concentrated sugar. They are not
healthy unless you are making your own.

You can have one cup of Oatmeal a day.
All herbs and spices.
6 oz of low fat yogurt twice a day. I like non-fat plain yogurt myself and I
like to throw fresh fruit in it. Depending on the fruit, if I feel it isn't
quite sweet enough I'll use half a packet of artificial sweetner or a few
drops of Stevia.
You are also allowed 4 egg whites a day.

You can get really creative with just these items. Bean salads, beans added
to lettuce, fresh fruit salads, fruit in yogurt, fruit in oatmeal etc etc..

You really aren't going to have to survive on just fruit. And please, if you
feel you might be prone to weakness, take a good vitamin with iron. I use a
liquid vitamin that tastes like apples that I market on the side but it's
pricey and this list is not set up to be a market place, so I won't say what
I use. But many health food stores carry good vitamins in pill form and if
you want one of the best iron tablets, the blood center always recommends
this brand over any others "Floradix" Iron + Herb tablets. You can take up
to 3 a day, they will not make you sick and if you are anemic you will feel
the benefits really quick. My dad's doctor was very enthusiastic over them
for my dad when I bought him a bottle. He was having too much trouble with
the prescription kind (my dad is diabetic and on dialysis) and dialysis was
making him anemic. He isn't anemic anymore, lol. Most healthfood stores

Greetings to everyone, this is Dr. Ian. First let me say that I'm so
grateful for Stephanie for starting this group. Support for those
trying to lose weight is extremely important. I have been extremely
busy, so I apologize for not dropping in more often, but I am going
to make a concerted effort to drop in at least twice a week. I have
read through many of the posts and I must say that I'm extremely
encouraged by all that everyone has written and the weight that
people are losing. I think that losing weight can be such a
struggle, but once you win the struggle, it can change your life
forever. It would be great if you all could send me some recipes
that you might've created for the different phases so that I can
share them with others. Just make sure you tell me the phase the
recipe fits. This is about community and sharing ideas and picking
each other up when necessary. Well, everyone's off to a great start
and I will keep checking in and answer questions that are
specifically addressed to me. We are starting to shoot the fourth
season of Celebrity Fit Club in a couple of weeks and it will air mid
to late summer. Thank you all for believing in yourselves and each
other and together we can win the battle.

All the best,
Dr. Ian-

I am on day 7 of the diet and going strong. The first few days were
difficult but soon I lost my craving for junk food.
Today my boss brought donut holes to work and I had to walk by them
every time I went to the bathroom-- but I didn't touch them!
Since starting the plan I have already lost 5 pounds. I am 5'5. I
weighed 152 when I started, now I am down to 147.
I have always exercised consistently but I wasn't loosing any weight
eating whatever I wanted. I knew I needed to make a change in my
diet if I wanted to see results. This diet sounded good to me
because it had you detoxify your body in a healthy way and reset
your body chemistry.
From past experience I knew that if I didn't eat something like
pancakes for months I never really craved them. However, if I ate
them every other day, I would think about them all the time.
Based on this it seemed logical to me that if I didn't eat pasta,
candy or junk food for 9 days I would stop craving those foods too.
So far that seems to be true.
As for exercise I am alternating weekly 3 days of elliptical machine
and 3 days of strength training. For strength training I am using
this workout DVD called Core Secrets. It is awesome. You do the
entire full body workout on an exercise ball. It is very intense.
I saw the address for this group on Amazon book review and thought
it was a great idea. I look forward to giving and receiving support.

Hi,
I just bought the book at the book store the other day. I have been
hesitating to buy it, and was going to order it online, but figured I
would wait till I can get it at book store. Well I read the first
couple chapters which included the Detox one, and I have to say, I
dont know if any of you actually felt this, but I feel very
overwhelmed with just this chapter right here, on only fruits. Im not
a big fruit person, and thats all I would be eating for 9 days? Well
would it count if I went to jamba juice and got me a fruit juice
drink? Anyways, Im just a little nervous to try this diet out, because
I couple years ago I tried a diet, and what ended up happening, it
said you can only eat this many carbs for this meal and this much
protien, and fat, on and on. Well I would stick to the plan and limit
myself, the problem was it said eat 6 times a day, and with my
schedule, it was hard to, so I ended up skipping meals, and only
eating very minimal for during the day. After about a month of that
crap, I did loose 20lbs, but I was sick as hell, no energy, very
tired, it was crap. Gave it up and ended up just gaining all back and
little bit more now. I didnt consider myself obese, I figured Im just
a little fat. Wrong!! I looked at the BMI chart in the back of the
book, and Im actually considered obese, Im at about 35 for my height.
I used to work out more, and lift, and was in fairly decent shape, not
as big as I am now, and that was 6 years ago, I was actually in HS and
was competitive with all my friends, who can lift more, and stay in
shape more for the ladies. Anyways, life changes, deal with more
school, dealing with job, dealing with girlfriend, and dealing with 2
year old child. But bottom line, I want to loose weight, but I am
nervous, I dont want to end up like the other diet getting sick off
it. But it has giving me hope seeing that this diet has worked for
pple and they say that they havnt got sick or any of that stuff. So I
am hoping I can pull this off and do it. Also just wondering, is there
more males in here, trying the diet out, cause this seems very female
based, and it just seems like I wouldnt belong here.

Hello everyone,

I am new to the group. I also just learned about the book and this
diet plan after seeing Dr Ian this morning on the Today Show with
Kelly LeBrock. I am an avid Celebrity Fit Club watcher and brought
his first book when it was released however I have been very lazy with
starting the diet or any other diet for that matter. I even brought
Harvey's workout DVD I think I did it twice. I am at a point in my
life that I I am ready to lose weight and get healthy once and for
all. I am going to buy the new Dr Ian book this morning and I am
looking to start the new plan next week which will give me time to
read the book and buy the required food. I am glad I found this group
because I am going to need the support I am also going to try to get
my mom to do it with me because she has been talking about doing
something to lose weight for awhile now also. And I think by doing it
with someone else will lead to my success also. Congrats to all of
you so far on your weight lose and I hope to be just as successful.

Hi Stephanie!

It is good to hear from you.
10 pounds is definitely nothing to shake a stick at!
I have also only been following the program loosely.  I did follow detox to a tee though.   I am hoping to get back on a better track this week though.  Today was a good start.  I had lots of veggies and brown rice for dinner.

I was so happy to find your group.  You really just don't know.  I have e-mailed with Dr. Ian once.  Prior to his book release for some guidance.  I think he is great!  I do hope the group will grow so he will join in the discussion once in a while.  Although I know he is busy.  So definitely promote the group!  I will as much as I can as well.
*********************************************
Well, it's in my signature file and I just did a review of the book on Amazon and posted the link to this group.  So that would be a start.

I think I am just bored with exercise in general.  I have never been one for exercise due to knee problems I have had since my teens.  That is why it so funny that I try to jog.  A friend of mine has suggested belly dancing but I don't know yet. And you are right, life does just get busy sometimes.  I try not to use that as an excuse though because I should be able to make time for myself everyday.  It just takes better scheduling.

Why can' t they do a celebrity fit club mentors program.  I would have definitely wanted to be a Kelly's Belly girl!  Kelly's success and Dr. Ian's support of her  really motivated me to do this once and for all.

Whew! That's a lot of time spent in focused exercise.  Maybe you just need to break it up with power walks in the park or taking a bicycle ride or something.  Breathing a lot of fresh air can do wonders for the psyche! LOL.   I don't watch television very much, I heard about the book doing an Amazon search. I forget how I learned of Doc. Ian's first book but somehow I found it and liked the approach and ordered it. Then I did a search on Dr. Ian looking for a support group (Everyone has them these days) and that was how I found out about the "Fat Smash Diet".

Well I was upset because in his first book Dr. Ian warns against gimmicky sounding diets and really, doesn't "Fat Smash" sound just a little gimmicky? LOL. Well I wrote Dr. Ian directly and questioned his motives and even accused him of leaving behind his principles.  Ahem, did I say yet that on occassion I can be just a little outspoken?

He wrote back and wondered how I could even say that after reading both books. Uh oh! Busted! I hadn't read the second book yet. So I tried to cover it up with questions asking what was so different and why should I abandon his first method for the second. (They are the same but I didn't KNOW that then.)  He didn't answer. And didn't answer and didn't answer.

Finally, I went and read more about it and ordered two books. Then I decided right after I ordered that there should be a support group started for it. I'm familiar with Yahoo lists and the rest is history.  I got the books in, started to read and was putting off the official start of the list when you posted! LOL, you forced me right into action.  Too funny.

I then wrote to Dr. Ian and the staff over there helped me with sending the 4 phases so I could post it (I didn't have the books yet remember.) and told me that if I would write again when the group started officially that they would make sure that Dr. Ian contributed. I'm going to hold them at their word. I also moderate a huge forum called Scam.com   http://www.scam.com and I'm not above blackmail if they let me down on their promise. (Is she kidding or does she mean it? Ahhhh! That IS the question isn't it?)  :)

So here we are and I see two more have joined us. A big warm welcome to you newcomers. Please don't be shy, and tell us about yourselves. We are here to help, inspire and cry if we need to together.

I think it is great that your husband will be going on the diet with you.  I believe it
will make it easier.  Even if he is a distance away.  plus...I would also wait until after my birthday before I did the detox.  I actually had to wait the few days. I did because it was Mom's Night Out though at my favorite restaurant right before I started.  LOL :0)

As far as my exercise routine At the gym:
I am trying to stay motivated to use the treadmill 3 days of the week.  I walk and jog, LOL!  if you want to call it that, in intervals.  I go about 3.8-4.5 mph.  Trust me though the jog does not last long.  My pace is to fast to really multitask now.  I can't even read my magazine on there anymore.  I listen to my headphones which I have set to play the music at different speeds.
I am also doing some weight lifting.  I actually just started doing it last week.  I do enjoy it more than the treadmill.
At home:  I am doing Pilate's twice a week.  I was doing this twice a week at the gym, which was free,  with my 14 yr. old daughter but have been having trouble making it there on time do to my job the last few weeks.  I also swear by my the exercise ball.  My computer chair is actually made with one too.  It is great for your posture.  But I agree with the fact that I look pretty silly on mine.  I am sure if I saw how low the ball went when I got on I would roll to the floor from laughter.  LOL just thinking about it! :0)

Hi Christina,

Welcome to the group. My name is Stephanie and I started the list.
Congratulations on your loss. How many places can you go and hear that
and not feel weird?
LOL

Anyway I started the list while reading Dr. Ian's first book "Take
Control of Your Diet" and after I had learned there was this second
book by him. Following the principles laid out in his first book I've
lost about 10 pounds. Not bad for someone who only loosely followed
it. I have read the Fat Smash book but will not be officially starting
the diet plan until after my birthday which is the 9th. The reason for
that is my husband who works out of state will be coming home next
week and we have plans for at least one dinner out. It seemed silly to
me to get through detox only to have to go back through it after he
goes back to work. He is going to start the diet as well afterwards
and though he doesn't have an Internet connection, I speak with him
all the time.

The group is small because I haven't officially promoted it yet. But
since people are starting to find us, I guess I better right?

By the way, I have been keeping in touch with Dr. Ian's staff and once
we get started they have said that Dr. Ian will participate. I guess
I'll officially invite him now.

I know what you mean about exercise. What kind of you doing? Anything
particular. I like walking on my treadmill because I can multi-task
while doing so. I strap on my walkman so I can listen to an audio
book, grab something small I am knitting on, like a sock or a
washcloth or handtowel, have my water at the ready. And once I warm up
for 5 minutes building speed and doing some exercises my chiripractor
showed me (lessens the time I spend in traction) I'm up to 3.0 miles
an hour (or whatever my heart monitor dictates is my target rate for
that day) and go for another 30 minutes or more (depending on how good
the book is). On those days that I can't follow this routine, I try to
do the strength training with some light weights and an exercise ball.
You know? One of those kinds you actually sit on. I know I probably
look goofy doing the exercises on it and for some reason that cracks
me up and keeps me going. Even if you are a reed you look silly on
those balls. LOL.

I'm soon to be 47 years old. Two teenage daughters still at home. One
16 the other 14. One daughter living on her own (she will be 26 the
end of April) with her fiance' and two granddaughters, Emma age 2 and
Hanna age 1. And one grandson, Zachary age 6, who lives with his daddy
here in town. I still have about 60 lbs to lose. When my husband is
home we'll get the pictures in bathing suits and ready the journals
for our big start.

What do you think might be the trouble you are having with doing the
exercise? Could it be boredom with what you are doing? Life getting
busy or a combo of both?

Stephanie/TX

Hi there!

I just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself to the group. It
seems pretty quiet here right now.

My name is Christina, age 33. I began the FatSmash Diet on February
9th, 2006. It was just days after I received my book in the mail.
I have since lost 14.5 pounds. Although I am happy with that amount
as a steady start since it is just over 2 pounds a week. I really
could use some support. I do not find the diet terribly hard to
stay on but the last 2 week have been difficult to stick with the
exercising. I must also admit that I do tend to go over my daily
cheese intake and do eat the occasional bread or pasta that is not
listed, but in moderation. I have about 50 more pounds I would like
to loose or however many more it takes me to be a size 10-12 again.
Since I am 6 feet tall that looks best on me.

A little non-diet information about me. I am married with 2
children, which I home educate. I am lucky to have all of my in
home family supporting me with this diet. I love to cook and
because of that it has been interesting converting some of my old
favorites into new ones that are healthier. I also love knitting
but it seems I never have the time anymore.

I would love to hear from you and offer any support I can!

Kind regards~
Christina
