最近台灣與美國的熱門話題都是「不景氣」、「失業」，台灣媒體不斷地在報導失業率有多高，失業人口有多少，遍地哀嚎，但很少去探討今天的人力市場真正需求為何？

以目前台灣約四％的失業率，對我們這些長期在紐約工作的New Yorker來說，其實只是「基本挑戰」，美國失業率在一九九○年便已是五％以上，從此一路竄升，到九二年竟高達八％，再加上全世界的頂尖人才都擠在紐約找工作，內憂外患，自己同時一直得面對雙重少數（女性與華人）的挑戰，那我們又如何在四面楚歌中還能位居要職，如魚得水呢？

秘訣無它，便是保持高度「危機意識」──不斷地擴大自己可被利用的價值（Value）與不可被取代性（Irreplaceable）。

六月份《Fortune》雜誌有篇文章提到，美國雖然景氣下滑，但好些企業仍是「求才若渴」，以一個頂著ＭＩＴ名校光環的ＭＢＡ為例，他從今年一月找工作至今，雖有許多面試的機會，他說，「可以感覺到今天情勢日趨明顯，企業對於招才，加倍小心。大家都在尋求Exactly Fit（真正能符合需求）的人才。」

我在紐約長期工作，在專業上儘管受過嚴格的訓練，但最難的，恐怕是面對強大的競爭與自己想百戰百勝的考驗吧！

第一課是，畢業後初進飯店工作時，有個約三十來歲的中級主管，生產後不到十天就回來上班，我問她為什麼不好好享受她的產假，反正有人代班，而且早回來又沒多錢可拿！

她笑笑地說：「Wendy，在紐約，如果你可以被取代三個星期，你也可以永遠被取代了。」嚇得我一身冷汗，從此謹記此言，終身難忘。

第二課是，我在飯店第一個正式的工作是餐廳的帶位小姐，因為原來的帶位小姐不幹了；Ellen年輕貌美，伶俐可人，因嫌工作時間太長，雖有主管百般挽留亦不惜絕然而去。

十年後，當時我三十一歲，已掌管幾家餐廳，她突然跑來問我，可否替她找個工作？我很為難地向她說，目前餐廳經理之職都已額滿，她竟說：「喔！不是啦！我只是要找帶位小姐工作而已啦！」

我目瞪口呆，不知如何跟她解釋，如今帶位小姐早就有一堆雙十年華的美女在排隊等，怎麼可能要一個三十五歲的美歐巴桑呢？

回頭再看台灣。近日，我們公司應徵兩個職位，在近百個應徵者之中，倒有幾個有趣的例子。

有個三十來歲，前來應徵活動企劃的帥哥，看來十分厲害，只有個小問題：他不喜歡在週末上班，而且也不希望加班，除非有很好的理由，以免影響生活品質。

公司協理笑著問他：「那我們是不是應將所有的活動都移到平常日（weekday）來辦？至於加班是因為大環境困難，大家都需加倍努力，這算是好理由嗎？」當然，我們請不起這位大牌，因為景氣越壞，我們
只能請「Exactly Fit」的人。

另一個職位則恰好有兩個人都很Qualify，背景、經歷類似。Ａ二十八歲，三年相關經驗；Ｂ則三十三歲，有六年經驗，但要求卻是Ａ近二倍的薪水。沒用Ｂ，是因為他比Ａ所多的三年經驗值，並不值得兩倍的薪水，這便是Value的比較。

台灣景氣愈壞，企業經營愈困難，Cost Down（降低成本）愈見重要，老闆眼中的「人才」，則是：Exactly Fit the Needs。找工作不難，難的是你自己夠不夠Exactly Fit？

景氣困難時，我們都有兩個選擇，一個是努力增加自己的Value，創造自己的不可被取代性，符合企業的需求，雖然辛苦，但將來的成就亦指日可待。另一個是懷著「錢多、事少、離家近」的偉大志向，慢慢尋夢，自是瀟灑，但將來也可能是「錢無、事無、在家閒」的境界！

V. My Career Tip: Work Hard for Yourself

It is YOUR career. If you want a better career, work hard for YOUR own self. No one will give you a better job, a raise, or a promotion due to nothing. If you decided to work hard for your better career, read my 5 Points advice as follows:

1. Be serious.

Are you really serious about achieving a successful career or do you allow the world to just "drag" you along? What action do you undertake each week, each day, each hour that will help you to a better career? What skills are you currently learning that will help you to expand your career options?

This is your own career, who cares?

2. Understand Yourself.

What are you good at?
What are your weaknesses?
What is your edge for a better career?
What do you like/love to do?

3. Be an Expert.

Be an expert of what you are doing for a living. If you are not an expert, why should you employer still hire you or even promote you? After you become an expert of what you are doing, learn how to be an expert of what your superior is doing. When you can do his/her job even better than him/her, this is the time of your promotion.

4. Ask for More Responsibilities.

This is the shortcut to your better career. It always works. Ask your superior for more responsibilities. Of course, that implies more works and more risks. But don't you know that a more senior position means more works and more risks?

5. Study others.

Why others have achieved career success? Stduy them and follow their habits of success. Don't read books. Read those successful people around you, your boss, your colleagues, your clients. The information in books are usually outdated or misleading. Read real people.
