II. Weekly Cut & Paste: 蛤蜊之歌

小時候我很喜歡做的一件事，就是幫媽媽檢查回來的蛤蜊裡有沒有壞的。蛤蜊的外殼看起來都差不多，但是如果一不小心讓一個臭掉的蛤蜊混在新鮮蛤蜊中，那整碗湯就糟蹋了，所以雖是小事一椿，我可一點也不敢掉以輕心，並將此神聖的使命視為莊嚴的儀式，用虔誠又恭敬的心情在做這件事。

檢查的方法是用左手先拿住一個蛤蜊，再用右手撿起其他蛤蜊，一個一個的敲敲看，如果蛤蜊敲出的聲音是結實的，就是新鮮的蛤蜊，如果敲的聲音是虛的，有點沙啞，不管它的口閉得多繄，還是臭的蛤蜊。

小孩子耳朵好，很容易就可以辨別出好壞，自從母親教過我之後，我幾乎不曾「誤判」過，也使家人每次在享受鮮美的蛤蜊湯時，都會誇獎這個「蛤蜊鑑定專家」。

有一天，母親又買回一包蛤蜊，我熟練的拿出一個大碗，開始我的鑑定工作，出乎意料之外的是：居然「所有的」蛤蜊都是壞掉的？我簡直不敢相信我的耳朵，一個一個再敲過一次，竟然仍是「沒有一個」蛤蜊是好的！

我捧著那一大碗蛤蜊去稟告母親，母親很是驚訝：「怎麼會這樣呢？這個賣蛤蜊的從來不會騙我呀？」

於是母親大人親自動手檢驗，這才發現原來我抓在左手中的那個蛤蜊是壞的！難怪敲起來聲音全部不對勁！這種「原來如此」、恍然大悟的經驗，往往在孩子心中烙下深刻的溝痕，然後進入記憶的深處，等候生命的唱盤再度轉到那個相似的部位。

大學畢業後我開始工作，我非常的努力，對自己有些期許，也有些要求，但是有一段時間我對周圍的人都看不順眼，在我眼中，「每一個人」都有令我難以忍受的缺點，我很想改造他們，而改造不了時，我又想躲避他們。我覺得自己很倒楣，很不幸，怎麼「都」遇到不好的人！

正當我沉醉於自怨自哀時，心中忽然響起「蛤蜊之歌」，難不成我就是那個壞掉的蛤蜊？我聽到那麼多「別人的」沙啞之聲竟可能是我本身造成的？按理，一個人不會只遇到壞人，周圍有些人對你友善，有些人對你不友善，這樣的機率最大。那我？那我可能就是那個不友善的人，我用自己的高標去檢驗我周圍的人，看起來我對大家都不滿意，其實我最不滿意的人是我自己！

我忘了我震驚於這個內心的自我發現有多久，我其實很難過，原來我沒我裝出來的那麼好，別人也沒我看的那麼差。我有兩個抉擇的方向：一個是－－把自己裝得更好，使得別人看起來更差！另一個選擇則是──開始學著去欣賞別人。因為只有在看到別人的好時，我才會發現自己的好，也才能真正欣賞自己。

這是一段漫長的歷程，一開始甚至要「強迫」自己，很像「視力矯正」。要把不順眼的看、看、看，看到順眼。每當我想放棄時，就想起那個差點害我將整碗新鮮的蛤蜊倒掉的臭蛤蜊。

幾年下來，我也體驗到原來這項能力不僅改善了我的人際關係，對於教師這個職份也有不可或缺的重要性。面對形形色色的學生，我如何去聽出噪音中的樂音，更進一步去判斷他的旋律和節奏？

沒想到吧？這小小的家事訓練，竟也可以影響我如此巨大！

IV. News Cutting of the Week: 細菌給人類的書簡

親愛的人類：

看見你們最近愁眉不展，念在我們長年的交情，特別寫封短盞，慰問一下。

時間過得很快呢！我們轉眼已在地球居往了約35億年，而你的族譜，才僅僅是我們的千分之一。請不要覺得冒犯，我們從來沒有小覷你們。多得你們的努力繁殖，我們才有機會大幅拓展版圖。不過，據我所知，很多生物就沒有我們般幸運，他們因為你們的出現而被滅族，或是數量大幅減少，或是被迫遷徙。對於牠們，你們可是最大型的疾病。

還是要謝謝你們的，自從你們開始聚居及發展村落後，我們不用像以往般費神，把自己變來變去，去適應新的宿主，而只是在小部份的動物及人類之間盪來盪去，既方便又簡單。

我們想，像是戀愛一樣，我們需要多點時間互相了解。到最後，總有方法令我們共存共生，就像在人類的口腔及腸道內，我們跟人類手牽手，直到海枯石爛。我們知道，在戀愛的過程中，大家曾經互相傷害，亦造成恐慌，其實我們是無心的，希望你能諒解。我們沒有腳，假若沒有人類，我們的新家族成員沒有可能「話咁快就到」地環遊世界，把它們極速輸出。

我們擔心，這是另一番血拼，可能經過一輪的適應，我們在人類體內穩定下來；也可能人類發明某種藥物，令我們「暫時」消失，直至再變種；極端的情況下，人類可能被我們滅種。對我們而言，人類滅種的確是可惜，但我們不愁無其他地方繼續生活；但對人類而言，減種就代表一切。

這個世界，在任何一個層面上，從來都是誰有越強的適應力，誰就越能生存！誰有越多的選擇，誰就越能生存！從這個角度看，我們是否要向細菌好好學習呢？

V. My Life Management Tip: Discision Making

The following is an email sent to me sometimes ago. I had received the same email for many times in the past years. This is an old story, but I still think that it is a good one.

The story given below is quite interesting and really gives us an insight into DECISION MAKING.

Which one will you choose?

A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track. The train came, and you were just beside the track interchange. You could make the train change its course to the disused track and saved most of the kids.

However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed.

Or would you rather let the train go its way?

Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make.

Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. You might think the same way, I guess.

Exactly, I thought the same way initially because to save most of the children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people would make, morally and emotionally.

But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place? Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was.

This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community, in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority are.

The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track was sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear for him.

The friend who forwarded me the story said he would not try to change the course of the train because he believed that the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens.

If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he never thought the train could come over to that track!

Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe. If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing hundreds of people to save these few kids.

While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need to be made, we may not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the right one.

"Remember that what's right isn't always popular...and what's popular isn't always right."

The story ends here. But of course you will agrue why not do something else instead of the above 2 choices. Yes, from the NLP point of view, the more choices you have, the more successful you are. In our everyday life, we are just unconsciously limited ourselves from having more choices.
