Hi and welcome again.

1. Recently there was a survey about reading power of children in Hong Kong. The result showed that our children's reading power is not good as compared with children of many other countries. They had identified one of the casues - most of their parents never read a book!!! I always believe that reading can increase both your and your children's Competitiveness. Read this week's Weekly Cut & Paste, and you might get some insights.

2. This is our third month of giving away a free classic ebook from our Classic Library Collections. This one will be easy but good. I like them very much. You can complete reading it within a day. They seem to be written for children. But I don't think so. Children might not be able to appreciate it and we adult can. This is the famous Aesop's Fables. Forget about the comment/lesson at the end of each story. These comments are for children only. You can create your own comment/lesson.

3. We are currently using 2 members' databases - [Keith To] and [Excel Centre]. In order for a simpler administration, I am shifting those members under the [Keith To] database to the [Excel Centre] database. You might receive an email informing you are added to the [Excel Centre] List. Just ignore it and do nothing. We will complete the whole process within 2 weeks. Thanks.

4. We are working on a new project - The Mastery System. The Mastery System is based on a personal development classic, which is more than 60 years' old. II. Weekly Cut & Paste: 閱讀有益，使妳工作更具競爭力

妳老是覺得在職場缺乏競爭力嗎？西方人說「Leader is reader」英業達集團副董事長溫世仁、PC HOME雜誌發行人詹宏志、台積電董事長張忠謀，都認為讀書為提升競爭力的根本。身為粉領族的妳是否也該開始效法呢？

記者問英業達董事長溫世仁，有什麼話要送給年輕人？

「開始讀書。」溫世仁只有這４個字。

自認為是一個終身旅行者，一年有300多天在旅行的溫世仁，路上除了帶簡單換洗衣物與電腦之外，就是書，「一路讀，一路丟，一路買。」去年他50歲創立「明日工作室」，開始網路出版的新事業，結合網路多媒體與書本。

他經常講一個身邊發生的故事：

有一個年輕孩子很早就開始與多媒體互動，很少看書，有一天他很難過，父親問他難過的感覺是什麼？「挫折？沮喪？失望？不舒服？」孩子講不出一個字來，因為他找不出一個適當的形容詞真切地描述自己的心情。

PC Home雜誌發行人詹宏志從報紙到出版，再到網路，他對父母最中肯的建議是，「在孩子還沒愛上看書以前，不要讓他上網。」

很多幼教專家也這麼警告：「當孩子還沒開始閱讀前，別讓他接觸電視。」聲光媒體的刺激會減弱幼兒對文字的耐心，一個不接觸文字、祇熟悉聲光的孩子，將成長為不耐人尋味的大人。

西方人說：「Leader is reader.」（領導者一定是閱讀者）。每個人接受新知的方式不同，有人透過看、有人透過聽、有人透過親身體驗，無論如何，閱讀是最有系統獲得知識的方法，它也許慢，效果卻最深遠。

台灣人由於填鴨式教育及聯考制度，讀書都極具功利目的，為的是考上名校名系，最後功成名就，少有真心喜歡閱讀者。看「課外書」有時還要被父母師長責罵浪費時間。

在這樣扭曲的教育下，一般人畢業之後不是不看書，就是看的書太輕，看書是為了打發時間、是一種較不被爭議的休閒活動。「夏蟲不可語冰」沒有深度的人同時也欠缺反省能力。

粉領族更要如此。

在不平等的工作環境中，要能與男性競爭，能更有效的扮演女性工作著的角色，讀書、懂書、消化書，更是提高工作競'爭力的不二法門。

至於該讀什麼呢？

田園作家大為梭羅說：「你應該選擇對你有益的讀物，因為你沒有時間閱讀其他的。」正忙著工作的妳，抽點空，看點需要大腦思考的書，對妳的工作影響並不輸給看熱門網路或是股票投資書。網路時代，知識完全透明開放、容易取得，讀書的目的不在於巨細靡遺記下所有內容，因為也記不了，因為博學比強記重要，以架設思想體系，「邏輯推理的能力才是未來的致勝關鍵。」前荷蘭飛利浦副總裁羅益強說。

即使21世紀由「網路」揭開序幕，從工業社會跳入網路社會，「書」仍是最古老且歷久不衰的閱讀工具。台積電董事長張忠謀每天維持5、6小時的閱讀，妳有他忙嗎？妳有他讀書的歷史長嗎？那還不趕快讀書，急起直追！

III. Activities Updating

1. The Institute of Mental Technology is offering her Certified Master Hypnotherapist Program this May. This is the most advanced hypnotherapy training offered by the institute currently. Only graduates of Certified Hypnotherapist Program can enroll.

2. Teleconferencing-Class is something new to people in Hong Kong. You dial into a teleconferencing bridge number and we all hook to the same telephone line. Then we deliver our training over the phone. Notes and handouts will be emailed before the class. You do not need to leave home and there is no travelling to school. Teleconferencing-Class will be one of the best training formats especially during this time in Hong Kong.

You might not get used to Teleconferencing-Class at the beginning. Once you are aware of its advantages, you will love it. I will conduct several Teleconferencing-Classes in the coming few weeks. Most of them are free of charge. These are gifts to our members. Only members of the Excel Centre can register. If you are receiving this regular email, you are already our member.

IV. News Cutting of the Week: 成功三步曲

陸艾齡－一個陌生的名字，但相信大家都聽過「劍橋護老院」吧！她就是該院創辦人，三月二十八日經濟日報刊出她的成功史。50多歲的陸艾齡，被稱為「護老院大王」，擁有近20年經營老人院舍經驗，可算是這一行的表表者。

她曾與友人合資經營飲食業，如茶餐廳、海鮮酒家等，但卻先後結業。陸艾齡於70年代曾為醫院註冊護士，當時一個護士相對要照顧約40位老人，感覺吃力不討好，便毅然離開了醫院。她與妹妹一直希望開辦護老院，以便能給予老人更好的照顧。

1985年間，陸艾齡與妹妹終於將夢想變成事實，開創了第一間「劍橋護老院」，由於生意好，陸續開設分院。她說現時經營老人院不再是只提供一般護理服務，而是使老人家的生活更充實，讓其更能享受生活。

陸艾齡的成功經驗，又一次引證了「只要有夢想，美夢可成真」，而一個充滿原動力的夢想是成功的第一步，為了追求這個夢想，相信她行了許多艱辛的路，終於得嘗所願。第二個令她成功的關鍵，在於她本著為別人服務的心，她為老人所安排的活動，如出外飲茶、逛公司等，處處均表現出其心思，這些貢獻和影響令護老行業有很大改進。第三個成功重點是「做自己喜歡做的事」，陸艾齡對護老工作情有獨鐘，離開了醫護工作仍念念不忘開設老人院舍服務，可見護老是她喜歡做的事，因此，在有機會發揮時就更能得心應手。

從以上種種跡象顯示，如果我們有夢想、本著為別人服務的心及選擇自己喜歡做的事，成功不再是遠在天涯，而是近在咫尺！

V. New Service from the Excel Centre: The Friday Laugh

Life seems to be too difficult to many people nowadays in Hong Kong. We need more laughters. So, I decided to start a new email list service, the Friday Laugh.
