Many people believe that as we grow older, our brain function will
deteriorate.
Recent researches find out that it is not your age making your
brain worse, but is not doing something that worsen it. Doing those
something can make your brain and your life better and better
through out your life.
According to the UCLA's Brain Research Institute, the brain's axons
and dendrites grow fastest with new material. The important thing is
to be actively involved in areas unfamiliar to you.
Always learn something new. If you stop learning, you not only stop
improving your competiveness, you are recuding your brain power
at the same time.
According to Marion Diamond, aerobic exercise, like swimming and
jogging can keep blood vessels (including those inside your brain)
in better shape.
From the research of Diamond and Rosenzweig, Elizabeth Gould,
Princeton, mice in an environment with interesting toys and playmates,
showed an increase in 4000 new neurons in the hippocampus
(crucial to memory and learning) compared to 2400 in the control
group with no toys or playmates. And older mice's brains also got
bigger and better quickly!
Playing with toys, puzzles, chess, mastermind, etc can be very
helpful. Playing is a serious matter to us.
According to Paul Tallal, Rutgers University neuroscientist, you create
your brain from the input you get. Reading can create intellectual
stimulation that can strengthen the brain. Our brains constantly
reorganize themselves. The higher the quatity and complexity of the
information we input to ourselves, the more re-organizations
happen in our brain.
According to neurologist Oliver Sacks, the brain uses a lot of energy
and blood. We cannot afford such "expensive" process if it have no
purpose. Neurons originally dedicated to perform a function and
which is no longer being used for some times, they'll either degenerate
or shift to other functions.
Use your brain more. Thinking is a good exercise for your brain.
