Re: new to the group
Hi Shauna
My daughter was diagnosed with Ewings in 1993 at age 9. Her tumor
was in her left femur bone. Plans were to amputate theleg at the
hip...But a new Pediatric Orthopedic Ongologist came to this
children's hospital and he did an allograft on that leg...removing
the femur bone and replacing it with a donor bone and a section of
her right leg fibula bone. It grew around the donor bone and created
a new femur bone over a few years. It was a fairly new procedure in
1993. She is now 23 yrs old. We did 15 months of chemo along with
the surgery. We have had no reoccurance of Ewings. About 6 years
ago we had a friend who's 12 yr. old son developed Ewings in his
ankle bone and they amputated his leg mid-calf. He has a prostesis
and is doing wonderful....you hardly ever hear of Ewing's only
Osteosarcoma.
I hope things go well for your son. I know it is tramatic but kids
surprise you and are pretty resilent...but it was probably easier
with a 9 yr old and harder for a 16 yr old. Just because of social
times with the age. I wish you all the best. I remember the day we
checked into the hospital for the first time...and a girl was leaving
after her final chemo for Osteo. Another mom said to the girl's mom
you are so lucky now your live can get back to normal and the mom's
reply was...our life will never be the same again. That is so true.
Even tho mine is 23...we still go for check ups once a year and you
still hold your breathe with each ache and pain.....
