Dear Group:
Hi! My name is Julie and I am 42yrs. old. I have had
epilepsy since the age of 2 after experiencing Encephalitis. We also have
epilepsy
in our family. At the present time I am involved in a 4 generation research
program with the epilepsy foundation in Nashville, TN. We have 4 living
generations with this disease living. I am the 3rd generation. My brother has
2
son's with it.
I am presently taking Trileptal and Keppra for my seizures, but am
experiencing a lot of problems since the Keppra was added. I have severe mood
swings
and my mother saves I am going through a personality change.
I am going through pre-opt testing for my second Right-Temporal Lobotomy.
Have been testing since last october. Was recently sent to Birmingham, Ala.
to the UAB to have a Meg-Study done for the second time since Dec. They want
me to come back down there and stay until they can see me have some seizures on
monitors for them to be able to give a more accurate diagonsis, I told them
to just talk with my epitologist at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tn and if he
approved to get together with him and make the arrangements. At this point I am
willing to do anything to get this surgery. My seizures are steadly getting
worse and more often.
My first surgery was done in 97. The doctor says it may be scar tissue and
would have to be scraped away again. If that proves to be the cause of the
seizures coming back after being gone for over 2 years, then I will need this
surgery done every so often to keep the scar tissue down to a minimum. Has
anyone ever experienced this problem?

Dawn,
I'm only taking 200mg, it is the most recent med
and I don't mind it really. When I changed Dr.s she
changed my meds from nurontin to Zonegran and coupled
it with an anti-depressant which really wasn't helping
at all so, since it was optional, I stopped taking it.
I still had seizures, but mostly around my cycle; (the funny
thing is that, since mine is irregular thats how I knew
it was creeping up on me). Those minimized when I started
The Pill and almost went away completely when I went on the clonozapan.
I only take that one for emergencies.
From what I understand, most anti seizure medications have
depression as a side-effect. I wouldn't be surprized. My mood
did change and it did play a part in my depression but it was not
"the cause". According to family practice I've been depressed my
whole life... *shrugs* people are strange.
Also, changing meds is always rough on me. Maybe if you just give
it a bit longer your body will adjust... maybe not.
And thanks for the welcome, I'm happy to be here.

Christina,
I knowticed you take Zonegran. How much and for how long? I just started
taking it and do not like it, in fact I had 3 seizures Tuesday. One of them was
so bad I busted an eye vessel(never done that before). Have you ever felt
depressed from it or did it change your attitude at all? Every since I've
started taking a larger dose of it, people at work have been saying that I am
acting different and I can tell. Welcome to the group.

Hi Loree,
I think what happened with the Keppra is that it caused some very bad
anxiety (and I am already an
anxious person), so I began to eat a lot during the year I was on it, and
did not watch my weight. Now
that I am overweight, my metabolism is very slow, and so it is hard to lose
the extra pounds. I am
trying, but not really having much success. I used to have the body of an
athlete. Now, I have the
body of 2 athletes.

Hi Craig:) Is it the meds that make you crave high cal foods or is it just
the meds change your metabolism? I maybe going for a change and gaining is
kind of freaky for me, long story, loree:)
Usually when I start on a different medication, I will have a weight
fluxuation, whether good or bad. This last time I gained about 140lbs when
I went from Tegretol to Keppra. For some reason Keppra did not stand well
with me, so my Neuro switched me to Topamax after a little over a year of
taking Keppra, but I had all of that weight gain. I still have it. I've
managed to get rid of some of it at times, but it comes back. So, now I'm
just fat. I'm working at losing it. I've lost up to 50lbs at one time, but
somehow, it finds it's way back. If you're frustrated with your weight, it
could be worse. Hey, I can only get my clothes from the expensive "Big and
Tall" stores.

I think both. I actually started gaining weight in high school,
when I started my medication; but I was pretty active so even though
it was more than usual it was manageable, (not to mention I'm pretty thin
to begin with) but once I graduated and my depression set in I just
stopped taking care of myself and it got pretty bad.
Weight gain, especially when you're young, is a very scary thing. I swear I
thought
I'd never get back to normal. Losing weight is a challenge but if people
knew you
when you were thin and then they see you haven't "kept up" it is soooooo...
not worse
just, it's a serious blow to your self esteem.
Anyhow, a big factor in your daughters depression may be this amazing
feeling of
being overwhelmed. Honestly I think a counselor could help, if she were
willing
of coarse. Ask her if she would be interested. If she's not interested, just
leave
it at that, if he curiosity is peaked help her find somebody. Make sure it's
a
counselor, not a psychiatrist. I don't think she needs any more meds; then
again,
I'm no doctor. Glad I could be of some assistance!

Thanks for your response, Dawn. You are right, it could be just a
teenager thing. Her meds haven't changed other than weaning her off
of one the doctor doesn't think is helping anyway. She was on an anti-
depressant for awhile, but we weaned her off as I didn't feel she
needed it. The "motivation" issue was no different at that time,
either.
We are just continuing to encourage her. Actually, yesterday she
walked almost two miles on the treadmill. There was a reward involved
so maybe that is what we will have to do, at least for awhile.
Thanks again and best wishes to you!
Aletha

I think both. I actually started gaining weight in high school,
when I started my medication; but I was pretty active so even though
it was more than usual it was manageable, (not to mention I'm pretty thin
to begin with) but once I graduated and my depression set in I just
stopped taking care of myself and it got pretty bad.
Weight gain, especially when you're young, is a very scary thing. I swear I
thought
I'd never get back to normal. Losing weight is a challenge but if people knew
you
when you were thin and then they see you haven't "kept up" it is soooooo... not
worse
just, it's a serious blow to your self esteem.
Anyhow, a big factor in your daughters depression may be this amazing feeling of
being overwhelmed. Honestly I think a counselor could help, if she were willing
of coarse. Ask her if she would be interested. If she's not interested, just
leave
it at that, if he curiosity is peaked help her find somebody. Make sure it's a
counselor, not a psychiatrist. I don't think she needs any more meds; then
again,
I'm no doctor. Glad I could be of some assistance!

I've been reading a lot lately that many people had trouble,
socially in way, when they were in high school. I got lucky enough
not to go to a place like that or had ignorant friends. Living in
the area where I did(city), you'd thought I would've been teased or
something, but it was nothing like that. My health teacher in ninth
grage had epilesy and I never heard of it before then, oddly enough
it was in ninth grade that I had my first grand-mal. It was after a
sleepover party at my house for my best friend, I scared her so bad
she was in tears. None of my friends acted any different to me after
I was diagnosed w/epilepsy and were always on me to make sure I took
my medicane. If I ever needed anyone to talk to about, they were
always there with an open ear.
My friend who I had the first seizure in front of is studing to
become an RN and anytime I have any questions about meds or anything
medical, all I have to do is call her. She is always more than
interested what meds I'm on, and doesn't mind when I call her about
stuff. Not only that, we went and had two pregnancies together(one
was just one month aprt), and were both in each weddings.
I was one of the lucky ones, friends wise, getting the seizures
under control is another story.

Dawn,
Hi and welcome to the group!
I'm Rhonda,45, from Colunmbus OH. I've had EP since I
was 2 yrs. old. I have Complex Partials and
Catamenials. The Catamenials are hormonal and are hard
for me to control. The Complex Partials are pretty
well controlled. I'm going to have surgery this summer
to hopefully get things under control again.
I hope you enjoy the group!!

Aletha,
She could just be going through a teenager spell, remember it happens to all
of us. I was just coming up with something simple. Has her meds changed lately?
Or maybe they need to adjust something because of the attitude change? My doctor
in the past in the past has had me on anti-stress/anti-depressents, and if she
doesn't want to say it's for depressent, she can say they are for stress. Just a
suggestion.

Hello everyone:
I will try not to turn this into a book; however, I am at a loss
as to what is happening and what to do.
Here is the situation: my 17 year-old daughter was diagnosed
with epilepsy at age 13. Her first seizures, that we know of,
happened at age 12 . . . we didn't know they were seizures because
they were not convulsive. Over the years, it has been difficult and
other illnesses followed--asthma, central sleep apnea, a recurring
staph infection (courtesy of her first hospital stay) and a "female
illness." At this time, her seizures seem to be pretty much under
control, the asthma is rare and the sleep apnea is much better and
almost cleared up. She has memory problems which may be caused by
short seizures in her sleep, medicine, the sleep apnea, or a
combination. Her grades this last nine weeks improved, which is good,
and she plays fast pitch softball and doing pretty well with that.
The problem is that (1) she is continuing to gain weight, and (2)
she seems so unmotivated in certain areas of life. For instance, she
has always wanted to go to college and play on a college team. The
frustration is she doesn't seem motivated to do what is necessary to
achieve the goal. We have suggested she walk on our treadmill to
build up her endurance and increase her speed on the field (right now
she is a fairly slow runner). She shows no interest in working hard
to achieve her goal. We have bought books, CD's, etc. to help her
practice the SAT and ACT tests. She, again, shows no interest. It is
almost as if she is reverting. She would rather watch t.v., even
watches cartoons again, than work on her goals. When she turned 15
she begged to get her learner's license. She was seizure-free for
almost 6 months, then started seizing again so she couldn't get the
license. Then last summer she begged again, so I went and got the
driver's test book for her to study. That is the last time she has
mentioned getting a license. I don't know if she is scared to take
the test because there is so much information or what.
I am really afraid that she will not survive in college, if she
even gets accepted, and she will be disillusioned when she is not
picked for a team. The sad part for me is I know what she could be
capable of if she would just try hard. For those of you have
personnally experienced epilepsy as a teenager, or those of you who
have a teen with epilepsy, have you gone through this and how did you
handle it?? I am not sure if the epilepsy meds or epilepsy itself has
anything to do with this or not. I know she has some peers who have
no illnesses to deal with and are not very motivated, either. So
maybe it is just her age. She has had boyfriends in the past, and
acts like she wants a boyfriend now. Again, no motivation. And what
I mean by that is not caring what she looks like, is happy wearing
sloppy clothes, hair up in a ponytail, etc. I know it shouldn't
matter what you look like, but lets be honest . . . boys this age DO
care what a girl looks like and want a girl who tries to make herself
look nice. She looked very nice for church yesterday, and one of the
boys spent quite a bit of time talking to her. My luck, she doesn't
like him as a boyfriend!! We try to be very supportive of her and
VERY carefull as to how we try to motivate her, but I am just running
out of patience, as SHE is quickly running out of time to work on
these goals.
Thanks for listening and any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Aletha

them gain weight!! The first one she was on with this side effect was

I went through high school with epilepsy. I actually
managed pretty well, but my high school was a bit different htan most.
I wen tto a performing arts magnet and I swear seizures or no I wouldn't
have survived otherwise. The fact that the people she tends to hang out
with may be a factor, it would depend on how much she values her peers,
how important it is for her to keep them and not "outshine" them. As far
as college goes she may not realize exactly how demanding college is.
People tell you time and time again but you don't really know until you
get there. Her slump sounds a lot like what I went through right after
I graduated high school and went to USF. Pffft, it was miserable. My
seizures were getting worse, I was gaining weight, since I had to quit
my job to go to school there was not steady flow of any kind of income,
I had no car since I had no lisence because I had seizures. As a result
I was becoming depressed and very unmotivated. I had all these hopes and
dreams and I watched myself sabatoge them, which made it all worse. I saw
myself as useless, all I wanted to do was watch TV and escape from everything.
I didn't want to deal with all these new responsabilities. Which was/is odd
as usually I'm very motivated and enjoy taking my challenges head on. I took
a break and went to live with my family in TX (a tiny town where eveybody has
a babay at 16 and loses all interest in any other life) and realized AH! I
would end up wasting my life if I didn't snap out of it. It didn't happen over
night but I decided to make the change. Now that I knew what to expect and
understood that my family was there to support me I managed to get back on
track.
I moved back home, I'm going to 2 schools, I have a job, I hae a car and drive
it
*snickers*, I'm back down to my normal weight, and, save last week, have been
mostly seizure free, really, the last one before that one was way back in Sep.
The most I can say id be patient, let her know your there to support her, not
that your disappointed in her, and maybe seek counseling. I hope that helps.

Corrine,
I have had the flashes that you're talking about out of the corner of my eyes
and I've had the ringing in my ears that come and go and I've also had where
I'll be looking at the computer and all of a sudden I start seeing flashing
spots in my vision, I've also had the glitter coming down, but I don't have
epilepsy, however, when I have these flashes, I drink some OJ or eat a
teaspoonfull of sugar and it goes away after about 5 minutes. I just think that
it's my blood sugar going low which is the same as hypoglycemia. I haven't had
this happen in a long time, but that's because I try to eat small meals
throughout the day and I also take supplements that help balance my bloodsugar.
Try doing that and see if that helps you. Some people who have hypoglycemia will
have grand mal seizures and some have described symptoms such as what you and I
have describe.

I have had ringing in my ears all my life. Growing up I was told that I was
"imagining" it and to be quiet.
I started having grand mal seizures last Easter, (2004)...in June I was
diagnosed with epilepsy. I take Dilantin and Neurontin.
Having had all the tests and answering many, many questions; I told that I have
had seizures my entire life.
That would include the ears ringing and seeing what looks like old fashioned
camera flashes out of the corner of my eye and having a floaty/drifty type
feeling when I start seeing what looks like silver glitter floating down from
the sky...even in the summer time. Also I have often had the experience of
waking up and feeling as if my fingers or hands or foot weigh like 1,000 lbs.

How long has she had it? Once, my daughter also had ringing in the ears that
would come and go but it went away after about a week. I believe that maybe she
might have had fluid in her ears. I also remember that she also complained that
her tummy hurt around that same time so it's possible that she was coming down
with something.
