Dear Patrick,  Bernie,  Rebecca and All,  I couldn't agree with Bernie and Rebecca more!  They are giving excellent advice.  I do just want to add that one of the beauties of good therapy or counseling is that these greatly assist a person in getting the strength and insight to do what they recommend.  Often, we can not stand alone.  We need the support of someone who really understands where we come from, how we feel and is astute in encouraging the steps that we are ready to take at each moment.  I am a therapist and I know the difference it can make!

Any questions or comments?  All my best to all of you-Dr.Barbara Becker Holstein

Hi everyone,

As I mentioned in my introductory email, I'm starting a new job
(countdown -- 2 days to go!) at our local community college. That
brought back some memories that made me smile.

When I was 17 & getting ready to fly out of the "nest" to college; my
father suggested that I should consider teaching as a career. Well, I
being 17 & all-knowing, didn't want any part of it. I wanted to be a
graphic artist. And that is what I did. I spent over 37 years of my
life in that field.

But now I found myself at a turning point in my life. I was "burned
out" as they say - just couldn't create on demand anymore - at least
not enjoying doing it. So I decided, after several years of part-time
jobs doing this & that, that it was time to find something that
touched my soul. I found myself in situations throughout my adult
life, as my children were growing up & till now, where I was teaching!
I was enjoying it immensely & so when the job at our college was
posted in the newspaper, it jumped out at me & sent a thrill down my
spine & I knew this is what I wanted to do.

I applied & eventually was offered the position & throughout this
time, I kept hearing my father's voice - "You should go into teaching,
what better job can there be? You work 9 months, have the summers off
& get paid for a whole year!"

My father was a difficult man when he was alive. He was strict, stern
& often unforgiving & harsh. He knew what he knew & that was that. I
never entertained the thought of defying him - if I knew what was good
for me! (My older sister tried & there was many a horrible,
frightening scene that left an imprint on my mind permanently). But
for some reason, he didn't insist that I become a teacher, tho he was
sure that it was the best thing for me. Instead, he allowed me to make
my own choice for my future without making me feel guilty.

Well, here I am today - thinking how I've come around to his way of
thinking - & thinking that if he were alive, he would be proud of me &
he wouldn't say "I told you so!" Yes, that

Hi Patrick,

I couldn't agree with Bernie more. Maybe you should focus on your
individuality ... find something that makes you unique, special.

The Enchanted Self teaches us to look into our childhood for hidden
talents that can reemerge with us as adults. Did you have something
special that you were espcially gifted at or enjoyed as a child? You
know, sometimes when we follow our childhood dreams, these things
turn into careers, and people who are doing what they love
(especially for a living) are never considered 'losers'! For
example, I took my love of computer work and turned it into a
successful work at home business. The possibilities for YOU are
endless.

I am of the opinion that people who feel 'different' and become
labeled as a 'loser' are just seriously misunderstood. If you learn
to think that YOU are special others will see you that way too!

Hang in there and let us know how you are doing ... one step at a
time.

Rebecca

Hi Patrick,

I wish that I could send you the quick solution to your problem of low
self esteem, but unfortunately there isn't one. Like anything worth
having, it's something we all have to work on & it takes time.

Try to keep in mind that many famous people were once considered
"freaks" & "losers" (Does Abraham Lincoln & Bill Gates ring a bell?) &
I'm sure they went through rough times in their lives. But, they took
the talents & abilities they had, worked hard to improve on them &
eventually they reaped the rewards. Were they losers? Were they
freaks? No, not at all.

We're all blessed with the gifts of individuality - we are all very
different people - no two of us alike & that makes life interesting;
so it's our job to find what it is that is so special about ourselves
(& there IS something in you Patrick - as in all of us) & develop it.
Also try to remember that the most important person in your life is
you - & when you learn to love yourself, because you are special &
deserve it, your self-esteem will grow. Know your limitations & accept
them, knowing that noone is perfect, & concentrate on your gifts!

Good luck to you!
Berni

Dear Patrick and Group, Patrick asked a question about low self-esteem.
This is certainly an issue that most of us have faced at some point or other.
I had an "AHA" moment last week, thinking about self-esteem. What healthy
self-esteem is all about is really A-Authenticity-feeling clear about who you
are, H-Hope-having a sense of hope about the future and your capacities in
the future, and A-Action. We always need to find ways to take positive
action in life. This helps us feel better about ourselves and also makes the
world a better place.

What do you think about my AHA ideas? Please respond. All the best,
Dr.Barbara Holstein

Dear Group, I am thrilled to have aboard two of my collaborators from THE
ENCHANTED SELF project-Doreen and Bernie. I know they will both stimulat our
discussions and sharing.

By the way, by mistake you received a part of one of my stories that I am
working on for my third book. Enjoy it anyway! I don't know how the e-group
address got mixed into my dialogue with my secretary over revisions!

Take care,

Barbara

Dear Barbara and Group,
I am very happy to finally be here. My name is Doreen and I am one
of Dr. Holstein's collaborators. I have been collaborating with Dr.
Holstein for about 10 years on the Enchanted Self project. My work on
this project has been direced towards discovering positive memories
that reside in each and every one of us through the power of
movement. Whether it be through past moving experiences, or moving
and dancing in the here and now, our bodies are a magnifcent source
for accessing joy and bringing more positive meaning into our lives.
I would love to share stories, experiences, and exercises with you. I
look forward to chatting with everyone.
Warmly,
Doreen

From Page two....to end.... Edit and email to me. les

==================
What a transforming experience! I felt as if God's feminine side whispered in
my ear, "You have a wonderful task to do and it involves working this dough
to the point of pure pleasure." For half an hour I pressed, rolled, pushed,
pulled, squeezed, turned and lifted the dough as hard as I could. Toby, an
instinctive teacher, praised my kneading technique and the strength of my
hands. I found myself talking about my grandmother and the homemade challah
she made when I was young. My hands, it seemed, had been inherited from a
long line of women empowered by a sacred undertaking.

When my hands and arms grew tired, Toby encouraged me to rest and have a
snack - delicious marble cake, creamy cheesecake, and homemade coffee ice
cream - all handmade from the egg whites left over from her challah
baking.

After our snack, we returned to our baking. Toby produced a bowl in which the
challah had already risen. That's when I realized that the batch I had
fashioned would be presented to Toby's next student - a woman I didn't know
but to whom I was giving something very special, just as a stranger had
bequeathed her kneading bowl to me.

I cut my new dough into six pieces, which I then rolled into long, thin
strips. Toby showed me how to braid them. I tried to follow her as she
spoke: "Bring these two strips close together and then bring this one under
them and then it goes up over the right." Or did she say left? "Then the
other goes down, and then you start all over."

I loved braiding the dough. After all the loaves were shaped, we made some
miniature loaves with the leftover dough. Everything went into the oven.
Toby invited me to visit the neighborhood while the bread baked, so I
shopped. The time flew by. When I returned, about an hour later, I found
Toby walking down the steps from her house with big gray plastic garbage bags
in her hand, filled with the fruit of our labor. She placed the bags in the
passenger and back seats of my car. We hugged and kissed each other. She
told me to come back any time for my next lesson.

The aroma filled the car. I had enough challah to last at least a month.
Toby climbed the stairs back to her family, and I began driving toward the
Verrazano Bridge. It was rush hour, but I was calm. I felt as if I had
accomplished something special, a feeling I hadn't had for years, perhaps not
since I was a girl and learned how to skip or ride my bike. The scent of the
challah and the memory of its baking replenished me. I had a restorative
sense of a job well done.

How Can You Relate To This Story?

One of the core ingredients for a Recipe for Enchantment lies in the doing.

Sometimes this doing happens privately, even within one's own mind such as
meditating. Sometimes it happens between people in ways that are refreshing
such as playing together or visiting. There is also a concept
of "doing good deeds". When we are doing in the service of others, often
a host of positive emotions take place. The person doing the action can feel
happy, uplifted, wanted, special and certainly the person who is the
recipient of the "doing" can feel joyful, contented, special, involved,
loved.

Think for a moment about when you have been "doing" in a way that either
enriches your life or someone else's. Don't be shy - the hardest part of this
may be giving yourself credit where credit is due. Have you helped someone
out? Been there in a special way for a friend? Have you taken good care of
yourself? Been your own best friend by an action you took - be it a
pampering bath or finally divorcing an abusive spouse? Share some of your
"doings" here.

On the other hand have you felt good when someone gave to you by "doing"?
Perhaps a teacher gave time and extra tutoring that made all the difference?
Or a friend had a meal waiting when you got home from the hospital? Share
what the person did and how it made you feel.

Hi all you wonderful Enchanted Beings!

I'm so delighted to be joining this e-group & I look forward to many
wonderful exchanges with all of you.

I've been collaborating with Barbara for quite a few years now (Time
flys so quickly, doesn't it?) and she has introduced me to several
new avenues of expression; namely her radio station and her TV show -
on which I was her guest (& she even entrusted me to take on her
radio show with another collaborator as well as on my own several
times). Both of those media proved to be very exciting for me & now
it's the e-group. Years ago I never would have dreamt that I'd been
doing all these things!

I'm look forward to our times together! I have to confess right up
front that I don't check my email real often, so if I don't respond
quickly, don't give up on me! I check about once a week, tho
sometimes more. I'm starting a new job in 2 weeks, so I'm going to be
a bit busy adjusting to a new routine & hours - but I'm really
excited!

Dear Group,  I am delighted to report that a colleague of mine from THE ENCHANTED SELF has joined our e-group.  She often leads workshops with me.  Her input should be very interesting.

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you about Lorna.  She wrote a little essay on how her husband has a tea party with her daughter every week and how good it is for the little girl.  I included part of her essay in a little article that will probably appear in one of my newsletters.  For now, I just want to reiterate that when we do good things for our kids or grandkids we get not only the satisfaction of a 'present' in the present, but we help them create a memory chest of positive memories.  This is so important for their future mental health and to help them confirm all their lives how special they are.  So go for it!

Hope to hear from you-any questions or topics you would like discussed?

All my best,  Dr. Barbara Holstein

PS for any of you in the NYC area I was excited to get on the Joan Hamburg radio show yesterday, talking about self-esteem.  I called in and made it on!  It was great.

Dear Group, It was great to read Doreen's reflections on snow. I'm looking
forward to sharing more positive memories and also the ways that we can
create those memories for our children. I'll be back to you sharing a great
way that Lorna is creating future positive self-esteem and positive memories
for her daughter, Sabrina. I'll try to get that to you by Friday.

Take care,

Barbara

Dear Barbara and Group,
At the end of December, 2000, I was in England visiting
my brother and his family, and we had snow! I so enjoyed
playing in the snow with my niece and nephews. I pulled
them along on a little sled, and we made a wonderful
snowman. Several neighborhood kids joined in to help.
We used pieces of potato for the eyes, and a carrot for
the nose. We gave him branches for arms. It was so much
fun! I actually enjoyed trudging about in the snow. It lay
for several days. This brought back memories of my
childhood in Scotland.
Now I live in Houston - no more snow!
Take care everyone,
Doreen.

Dear Group, I am delighted to be doing this tele-class tomorrow and hope so
much that several of you might be able to attend! I am also pleased to
announce that several people have written to me on my e-mail at
encself@... and will be receiving free copies of my second book, Recipes
for Enchantment.

How is everyone? On the East Coast we had our first snow fall. For many
that
brings back pleasant memories-whether it is making angel wings in the snow,
snowmen, or just coming in for hot chocolate afterwards! Some of my best
memories were of sledding across from where I lived in Fairfield, Conn. It
wasn't a big hill, really just an open house lot with a downgrade. But I
huffed and puffed, pulling that wooden sled up and then going down and I
really burned some calories. I remember the sun being out and my breathe
coming out in smoke and feeling so alive and exhausted at the same time!

Do you have any positive memories of snow days to share?

Take care,

Barbara

Class Description:

As part of a series of additional career directions
which clinicians, due in part to their training,
can readily and passionately pursue, we are offering
the first in our 'Author Series'.

Please join psychologist and author Barbara Holstein
for her noted and innovative perspectives on living
life and methods for change for therapy clients, the
public, and the world. She will discuss her books,
The Enchanted Self, Recipes For Enchantment, and her
third work in progress (the title is a mystery). Dr.
Holstein believes (as most of us do) that we have the
resources and power to change, but have not yet
learned specific strategies needed to fully and with
fun, tap into them. She teaches us how to utilize
memories and experiences within all our senses that
have had a positive and fulfilling impact on our
lives and then to integrate them in a positive way
into our present so that we can learn to live with a
positive focus and more joy in our lives.

See you there!

Barbara,

What a great idea to give away some copies of your book over the
holidays. Lucky me, I have already read it! Members, I can tell you
that this book is a wonderful collection of stories that will surely
warm your heart and bring a little enchantment to your life. I
thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

We really want to hear from all of you. If you have an enchanted
story of your own to share, or want to comment on a recent e-zine
that you received, please let us know your thoughts. Let's try to
keep that holiday spirit going a little longer this year and share
our thoughts with each other.

Maybe you have some holiday memories to share? Maybe you would like
to respond to the events of September 11th? Perhaps you have wishes
and dreams for the new year? How about some resolutions?

I look forward to getting to know all of you better in 2002. Take
care, and have a great weekend!

Rebecca :)

Dear Rebecca and all members,  What a lovely tradition that really turns into great memories and fun!  I just returned from a couple of days in Washington, D.C.  It was great to see our capital all dolled up for the Season looking great.

For me, interestly enough, Washington has some wonderful memories.  My parents first took me there when I was nine and I loved sightseeing.  My mother took me to the White House and the Capital and we stayed at the big old Mayflower.  Our bedroom was gigantic and I loved running around the hotel.  I knew enough history even then to feel special being an American and being there.

I remember a funny memory-singing a beautiful tune to my mother as we walked down the street that I couldn't place.  I wanted so much for her to recognize it and then we would know the song for the future.  But it came out of my mouth differently than inside my head and she couldn't place it.  I remember saying to her,  "But I will forget it and then I will never know!"  And that is what happened.  By the time I was a year older it was gone.

The best thing happened to us in Washington about 12 years ago.  We took four kids with us and they upgraded us to a six room suite!  We were in heaven, literallly dancing from room to room and not having to pay a dime extra!

So, those are some of my Washington stories-even a place seldom visited can be a treasure house of memories.

Don't forget to send my your full name and address and the first three people to do so get my book free as a New Year's Gift!  All my best, Dr. Barbara Holstein

Happy holidays to you all!

I wanted to share something with the group because I have had a lot
of friends and family members interested in a tradition that I have
started with my new family.

We celebrate Christmas each year and always have a tree. Throughout
the year I collect Christmas ornaments from all the different places
that we visit on trips. Usually I can find the same type of
ornament. Lots of gift shops carry the ones that are thin, gold
plated, and depict the name of the place where you are buying from.
They also usually have a scene appropriate to the same place. For
example, we have ornaments from New Orleans with a riverboat, St.
Thomas with a scene of a sandy beach and palms, and New Hampshire
with a wooded scene and the white mountains ... They are all
beautiful and just one glance at each different one brings back a lot
of great memories of vacations that we have taken over the past few
years.

I expect by the time we are old and gray that we will have quite a
few ornaments on the tree from all over the world! I don't mind.
These ornaments are special to me. They remind me of warm memories
and enchanted moments. There is no more special time for me than
when we trim the tree and remember all the fun places we visited and
happy memories that we made. I love to just sit back and sip my
eggnog and think about all the places we have been. My husband and I
usually laugh and laugh as we recall funny memories.

This is the best holiday tradition that I can think of. I was
wondering if any of you have a unique holiday tradition that you
would like to share.

Best wishes for a very happy holiday season to all of you!

Rebecca :)

The following came from an exercise in a recent article from Dr.
Holstein:

"Have you ever had something positive come around again? Perhaps the
shape had changed but the essence was almost the same? If you have,
can you share it with us as I did? Or if you can't think of anything
in particular, try to remember several wishes of childhood and think
about how they would reinvent themselves now. This can be fun to do
and can even lead to a determined effort to finally make an old wish
or desire come true."

The following is the response to this exercise from Ed Aberdeen,
another writer with www.SFPNN.COM:

"Oh YES... this holiday season is full of such memories. :-) :-)
I was raised in NYC and we were overwhelmed by Macy's. It was a true
wonderland at that time. I keep meaning to revisit it in NYC.
However; we have so many wonderful malls in NJ that contain a Macys
and have so much more. The children of today have so much more than
we had but the sad thing is that they seem to take a lot of things
for granted. Things that we were so amazed at, they shove aside for
the next thing that comes their way. I am so glad I grew up before
TV, Video, Computers, etc. I have been able to savor these fabulous
inventions gradually as they have come upon the scene. We didn't
even have a family car or telephone.

We were very happy without all those things. When I see the
youngsters of today receiving so many, many toys, I feel sorry for
them. They do not get a chance to savor them but just throw them
aside to open yet another gift. We would savor each and every one of
our few simple gifts. Some key gifts that come to mind for me were:
Tinkertoys, Chemistry Set, Monopoly, Telescope, Microscope, Magic
Set, Astronomy Set. They were key gifts in different years. Now the
children get them all in one Christmas or Hanukkah. :-) :-)

My greatest wish each holiday season was that the spirit of love and
giving would be prevalent all year long. It saddened me when the
lights and great feelings of love & giving seem to be gone for so
many in January of each year.

Thanks for inspiring me to reminisce of the wonderful childhood that
I had during the Great Depression. They were truly wonderful times!
We appreciated everything we got. :-) :-)"

Dear Barbara,
Unfortunately we are unable to buy many gifts
this year due to a limited budget. We have given
money to a charity which buys toys for needy
children, and are giving one gift to our niece
and nephews, but that's it for this year.
I hope you have success with this post - it
was a good idea to ask.
All good wishes,
Doreen.

Dear Group, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I am looking for
ideas and advice! What would convince you to buy Recipes For Enchantment,
The Secret Ingredient is YOU! for Christmas or Chanakah gifts? Most of you
have enjoyed several the stories as I have put them in the e-mail newsletter
and got great responses. I know the stories are moving and fun and the
activity section following each story gives you a chance to journal in
meaningful ways. I thought the price was fair at 9.95 plus shipping. My
price included some bookmarks and paper newsletters also. How does the
price strike you? Of course there is the e-book which only costs 4.95.
Does that format appeal to you at all? Would you give an e-book copy as a
gift? I do need your feedback and advice-Would you buy the book or even
several copies if I sold it to you at say, $8.00 a copy? What else might do
the trick? Would you prefer a less costly mailing arrangement, even though
it would take longer to get delivered? I really need feedback. I hope you

Dear Linda and all my e-group friends, Thanks for that lovely response,
Linda. I am always amazed by small acts of kindness and how good they can
make me feel. I'm glad you enjoyed the story. I'm also off for

Hi, Dr. Holstein,
This is first time I am joining your online forum. Forgive me if I
place my message in the wrong space. I really enjoyed the story. I
do like the idea of getting one story at a time. I was really
impressed how a simple act of kindness no matter how insignificant it
seems can really inspire someone and make you feel better about
yourself. This story remains me of myself in some respects because
of the little deeds I perform daily for my family and at the office.
At times I do not get a thank you but, I know I am in my own way
making our world a better place and that makes me feel good.

I will be spending my Thanksgiving with my family in Maryland. We are
all cooking and bringing a dish. I hope you have an enchanted
Thanksgiving. --Linda P.S. Thanks for the dose of inspiration!
