" What have you done to help yourself and/or the rest of the world the last week? Please share-we need each others support and ideas ".
Hello Barbara and everyone else on this list,
Last Thursday night my husband and I were watching the news about the war going on in Iraq. I said to him that I really wanted to find a way to support the soldiers over there. So, lo and behold, in my email that afternoon a girlfriend sends me a link for operationmilitarysupport.com -- This site was started by a mom in California who said there were so many soldiers that weren't receiving cards or packages so she was setting up a pen pal type of exchange. I went to her site, typed my email and address and in a few minutes I was given the name and address of a marine serving in Iraq. I was thrilled! My husband called and I told him what i did and he said "get me one too"
So we are now supporting 2 of our heroes right now. This email is not to be anything pro or con about the war, it's about the people that are sent to fight and defend for us and that's who we are supporting. I also sent the email and website out to a lot of friends and family and they did the same. Do you know the wonderful part??? By Sunday they had more people wanting to send to soldiers than they had names of soldiers who needed support - that is blessed!!! I also have a nephew that is over there and I will send him things. However, he has a huge family and will get things from so many people that to me it just seem unbalanced. That's why we wanted to connect with others that aren't as fortunate in having close family and friends.
This website is trying to catch up and see if there are other areas of the military that need assistance. I have sent off a few cards and today went and bought a bunch of items that they need and even convinced the store manager to give me a discount. He gave me a lot of the items free!!
This has been a really neat endeavor to be involved in. That's what I've done lately and it's really helped me and I hope helped our soldiers too. I spend more of my free time now on things I can do to boost their morale and it's the least I feel I can do.
Thanks for letting me share!
Lisa
