Dear Group and baby Glory, It has been a pleasure to read the exchanges going on in the e-group the last week or so. Patty had a lot to say about her name and other names that intrigue her. I was always intrigued with my name, Barbara-once I found out that it was derived from Barbarian and means 'stragner, foreigner, on the outside.'
I often see myself as a kind of adventurer. I love people and to not be locked into one tight knit groupl I enjoy very good friends but still want that sense of adventure that comes not only with travel but meeting new friends.
My middle name Irene was given to me in honor of my great grandfather, Isaac Watchmaker. I never knew him but I have always admired him. He came to the United States, alone, at age 11 and ultimately married my greatgrandmother Sarah Feinberg, had 11 children, nine lived past infancy, and was a wonderful husband and father. My grandmother, Rose Silverman, adored him. She was the oldest and always told me stories about how he would come home for lunch and sit a child on each knee, with such love and affection as they all eat lunch. He was a brilliant self-made investment banker. (I'm not sure I inherited any of those abilities.) He loved to walk-I do also. I am proud to be named for him.
There is magic and power in names! Of course, sometimes we have to rename ourselves to get to that magic. If you could rename yourself at this stage of your life, what would your new name be? Let's play with that fantasy for a few days.
Hope to hear from you soon-YOU witht that great name just waiting to share with us! All my best, Dr. Barbara Irene Becker Holstein
